It is 1954, World War II veteran and U. S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his partner, Chuck Aule, travel to the Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, located on "Shutter Island" in Massachusetts. A patient named Rachel Solando has mysteriously disappeared, even though she was kept in a locked room under constant supervision. Shortly after Daniels and Aule reach their destination, a violent hurricane knocks out the electricity and chaos ensues. The storm mirrors Teddy's dark mood; he suspects that something sinister is going on here. In addition, he has a secret agenda that has impelled him to visit this place, one that he cannot reveal to anyone.
Lehane describes Shutter Island in meticulous detail, with its steep cliffs, numerous caves, debris-filled shoreline, and large rat population. This is a spooky locale with a fort, a lighthouse, and other old structures that were used during the Civil War. The island's isolation strikes a chord in Teddy, who has been intensely lonely since he lost his wife, Dolores, under tragic circumstances. When Teddy and Chuck meet one of the hospital's psychiatrists, Dr. J. Cawley, along with the doctor's colleagues, they sense that some members of the staff may be lying to them. What are they hiding? Worse yet, to what lengths are they willing to go to conceal their activities?
Readers who expect a shocking conclusion will not be disappointed. What transpires in this disturbing, suspenseful, and far-out thriller completely shatters both Teddy's and our illusions. This is a melancholy novel, in which Lehane implies that so-called civilized people are capable, under certain circumstances, of committing unspeakable acts. In addition, the line between emotionally stable and insane individuals is not as clear-cut as we would like to believe.
