Book Review: 4 Stars Only Because It Led To A Great Movie
Summary: 4 Stars
I am rating this book 4 stars only because it was the basis for a great adapted screenplay and movie; so you have to give the book some extra credit for that. After reading this book, one should admire even more the genius of movie makers Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor; they turned a ragged novel into a brilliant film.
I agree with another reviewer that mentioned he wasn't sure why he finished the book, but it had an undeniable pull to it. I very much liked the characters and the story, but the actual writing was fairly awful. It reminded me of a song that has great music and vocals, but terrible lyrics. If you don't pay too much attention to the words, you'll find yourself tapping your toes and bobbing your head.
The descriptions in this book felt forced, and I kept thinking the author wrote this book by constantly referring to a dictionary, thesaurus, and other writer's tools. It seemed as though Pickett went out of his way to use words and references that a college English student might use to try to impress a professor, or a potential date.
Sideways, the story, is like a grape that in the right hands can be turned into a superb wine--like the movie--or can be turned into cheap jug wine--like the book. Nonetheless, after a few glasses of this cheap wine, and know longer caring about taste, I found myself enjoying it. It's kind of maddening.
