Book Review: A perfect summer read!
Summary: 5 Stars
This is my third Maxwell novel and I couldn't put it down. I have been fascinated and at times obsessed by da Vinci throughout my life and was reticent at first about this novel, thinking perhaps it might disappoint me or 'reveal' what I didn't want to know about his life.
Quite the contrary! Maxwell delighted me with her spin on his life, and then she added this clever, intelligent woman - his mother - in ways that made me believe his brilliance was not a fluke but came from genes that made sense.
One of the things I enjoy about reading Maxwell is that she doesn't dummy down her heroines for the sake of the love story. She gives us strong courageous women, as I think they must have been, rather than shallow pretty women waiting to get saved by some hero.
There are so few really talented strong women in current books and movies, mirroring our society as a whole, where most fictional women are still told that 'boys don't like smart girls' and it's more important to be pretty, even shallow, than to develop oneself to the fullest.
Caterina is a great character. Thank you, Robin, once again.
