What would you do for your child?
That is the question when Caterina has a child out of wedlock with Piero; suddenly the small hamlet of Vinci is filled with people who are more than willing to cast the first stone! Where once she and her father were respected and loved, with a child and no marriage prospect she is shunned and maligned.
But her father is more than willing to raise and love her child as he raised and loved her. All should be well, but then the spineless father of Leonardo decides he wants him, being the first born son and all --- granted he is a bastard (the son in this case, though Dad is too). Leonardo is taken from Caterina and moved to his family's home, but thte baby is starving to death and so his mother is brought in as wet nurse, given a rodent infested hovel above the barn and treated with utter contempt. But she and her child thrives.
And so it goes with Caterina, she is there to provide love and support for her inquisitive and brilliant little boy.
And what does she do when he is taken and sent to Florence....well, read this novel and find out!
You will encounter the Medici clan, Savanorola and Popes Sixtus, and Innocent. This is a gratifying read, there are moments when you must just take it at face value, but for the most part it will inform on much of history through the Italian Renaissance.
