Book Review: A Tried and True Formula Well Followed

Joan Melton's "Singing in Musical Theater" is a compilation of interviews with some of the world's formost musical theater voice pedagogues. She takes a similar format to the one used by Jerome Hines in his classic book "Great Singers on Great Singing," in which she asks the same probing questions of each interviewee. The similarities and differences of their answers then become the primary point of interest as the reader learns by comparison/contrast. The book does not present details of any specific system, but limits itself to overarching concepts and philosophies. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in learning about the culture of musical theater style singing.
