Book Review: ...not quite as much for everyone as i'd hoped...
Summary: 3 Stars
Firstly, I bought the book because a friend of mine warned me about all the e-mails. I thought the book would help me come up with a (much needed!) alternative cleaning routine. My house was clean and uncluttered to begin with, and I'm an organized person. However, I thought there HAD to be a better way to clean than to spend morning till night on Saturdays cleaning the house from top to bottom. This book gave me that much needed alternative, and I'm in my third week of applying the author's approach.I do, however, feel this book and the entire program is geared much more toward stay-at-home moms, though the author insists otherwise. I try to stay consistent with the author's approach and do all the tasks I'm supposed to do each day. Granted, devoting only 15 or 30 minutes daily in that week's required "zone" (in additon to the one hour of 'general' cleaning once a week) isn't bad at all; that's really not a lot of time. If that's ALL you have to do! But for women who work outside of the home, it's hard to make just ONE day an errand day. If you get off at 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon, just when are you supposed to run to the bank? What if the only bank close to your job is a 20 minute drive, and you only get 30 minutes for lunch? (Saturdays and Sundays are supposed to be reserved for family and friends. The BANK is about to be MY friend, OKAY?) Are you telling me you are supposed to run to the drycleaners, pick up a week's worth of groceries, buy the extra pair of shoes your child needs, pick up flea meds at the vet --- ALL after 5:00 p.m.? And still be expected to cook dinner, fold the load of clothes you threw in the washer this morning ('cause they sho 'nuff don't fold THEMSELVES!), clean your weekly 'zone', clean the kitchen, scrub the sink and do your 'nightly routine' (and you KNOW it's a full one!)? What about the time it takes to help your kids with their homework and give them baths? (forGET about taking yourself a warm bubble bath to reward yourself...you'll fall asleep in the tub from sheer exhaustion!) Women who work outside the home just don't have this kind of time! What if we have a 30 minute or more commute, and still have to do the drop off and pick up of kids from daycare?? Heaven forbid, what if you're a single mom??!! What day are you expected to cut the grass?! It seems to me that if you are a single mother who works full time, this book just won't entirely work for you. It's a good book that you'll be able to glean helpful suggestions from, but I just can't see the entire program working for you. It definitely seems geared toward stay-at-home moms at the least, and women who have husbands at the worst! Not every home is set up that way, and single moms who have young children and work full time need a book written especially for them. I'm not a mother, and I'm not single, yet I can see the slant in this book. With that in mind, I did find it helpful, albeit 'sappy' at some points. I really think many women can benefit from it. Just not all women.
