Book Review: A Great Companion Piece To A Great Series
Summary: 5 Stars

'Better Living Through Death' is no cheap spin-off. The book is a companion piece to this excellent series in every respect. The unique art direction and design in Six Feet Under are reproduced to great effect here, and the content is second to none.

Any Six Feet Under afficionado will recognise the tiny plot twists which have featured in the first three seasons. Clare and Billy's IM discussions and photographs, a chapter of Brenda's erotic novel, David's rousing speech attacking Kroener and Nate's MRI scan pictures are just some of the features which give more depth to the on screen dramas. There is also a pleasing amount of back story, such as letters sent between Ruth and Nathaniel when he was serving in Vietnam, David's hilarious fan letters to Matt Dillon and Nate's less than glowing school reports.

So many TV tie-ins are so packed with glossy stills, quotes and character biogs that any ardent viewer could write them themselves. The writers and producers of Six Feet Under have gone to great lengths to create a high quality book which is artistically laid out and offers a more in depth look into the series and characters. I thouroughly recommend it.

Book Review: Better Living Through Death
Summary: 5 Stars

'Better Living Through Death' is a great companion book to the excellent six feet under series. It doesn't analyse or discuss the series, but rather fleshes out the history and characters. You get things like Nate's co-op newsletters, Davids school reports, short stories by Claire and Brenda that feature in the series, as well as love letters between Ruth and Nathanial, photos, Billy's hospital discharge notes, Nate's AVM medical notes and IM messages. The book is interspersed with quotes from various spiritual books such as the bible, bhagavad gita, tibetan book of living and dying etc, as well as some excellent stills and quotes from the various series. If you're a huge fan of the series then this will really add an insight into the lives of the characters and adds an extra dimension when you come to watch again. Overall, a unique and fascinating read, presented in an attractive and compelling way. Worth a read.
