Book Review: Naughty but nice

I could say a lot about this book which would convince people NOT to read it. Chris Nieratko isn't a nice guy, as both Johnny Knoxville and Dave Carnie point out in their introductions to the book. By the end of the book it's likely that you too will be of the same opinion. However, what makes this book well worth reading is the fact that Nieratko knows that he's not a nice guy. Ostensibly a collection of reviews of porn movies culled from various magazines, Nieratko actually uses these as an opportunity to write about himself and his life, mentioning the movies only very very rarely, if at all. There is a charm to all this, the fact that he is so very honest about the horrible things he does and thinks and says, and is so honest about the fact that, yes, he's an idiot, you can't help but think that he's actually quite a nice guy. A contradiction? Sure. But this is really a book of contradictions. If you are offended by pretty much anything then it's probably advisable to stay away, but in amongst what might be considered 'shock' writing there are moments of almost heartbreaking tenderness - which are actually the genuinely shocking parts of the book. It is also extremely funny, though much of the time there is an element of 'I really shouldn't be laughing about this!' to the humour.
