Book Reviews of Skinny BitchBook Review: A book that finally change the way I eat and feel healthy and fulfilled with the new way of eating Summary: 5 Stars
Disclaimer: Please excuse my spelling, I moved to the States when I was 27 from Asia so please bare with my spelling.
This is the best "diet book" I ever read. The tough love style of depicting the stomach turning facts of the how the whole meat industry work, the references they quote in everything they wrote is very informative. I suspect some of the one start reviews are written by people who have direct interest or connection with the meat industry (I noticed a lot of the people who gave one star to this book this is the only review they gave in their profile. Makes me wonder did they just create a username to give a review to this one book??? Hey, the meat industry is a multi-billions dollars industry, I'm sure they want to fight back because this book is detrimental to their business) The food industry are very powerful and have lobbyist just as wall street, pharmaceutical companies and tobacco companies. The book as powerful and knowledgeable as Skinny Bitch is a threat to the meat industry because of the popularity of this book.
As far as for me, I went vegan after I read this book 3 weeks ago mainly because I was so disgusted by the animal cruelty, the insanitary handling in the meat factories, and the knowledge in the book that our saliva and digestive systems are ill equipped to digest meat as we only secrete 1/10 of the enzyme as needed to digest food as the carnivores. In three weeks following the guidelines in this book: no meat, no diary product, no soda ( I still cheat by drinking coffee every other day or so) I have lost 10 lbs and I can feel the change in how my body feels. First of all because I only eat whole grain/brown rice and avoid any kind of processed carbs, I don't experience the hunger pangs I always felt every 4 or 5 hours my whole life. I used to feel such anxiety and starving and "have to eat or I'll die" every 4 hours because of the yoyo effects of blood sugars in my body when I was eating processed carbs (white bread, white rice, refined sugar products), now after my meal I feel a sustained energy and feeling of "full" for 6 or 7 hours at a time, and I don't feel the anxiety that I had to eat or I'll die because of the yoyo effects in my blood sugar by eating simple carbs. I feel so much healthier, lighter, the bloatedness I always felt is gone, and I lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks. I purchased dozens of other diet books such as "fit for life" or so many of raw food books and the u.s dietician's nutrition facts book, none of the books I read in the last 10 years in my effort in trying to lose weight has ever have the lasting effect for me to really stick to the new way of eating as this book inspired me.
Don't listen to me or any other people here. Try cut out meat and dairy product for a week and see what your body tells you. You will not want to go back.
Book Review: A call to arms rather than a diet book Summary: 1 Stars
This book has very little to do with dieting and much more to do with attacking the ranching industries and promoting a vegan lifestyle. It attempts to gross the reader out with images of eating "carcasses" and sucking on your mother's breast in order to convince the reader that meat and any of its byproducts are unhealthy. This book is a bait and switch and a complete waste of time and money. If I wanted a book on the politics of the meat industry, I would have bought one.
Book Review: A complete shock to me Summary: 5 Stars
This book was definitely NOT what I was expecting. I had never heard of it, but happened to be browsing Barnes and Noble and saw it sitting there in the bestseller nonfiction section. Of course, the cover design and title did the job intended because I picked it up. The design of the cover and the title does NOT look like a health or nutritional book...it looks like Chick Lit. I half expected to pick up a fictional book that had been placed in the wrong section. I glanced through it and immediately picked up on the author's writing style....we could call it "no nonsense" but that really isn't adequately describing it. It's laced in profanity, but at times reads more like a cup of coffee with that "Friend" we all have...you know the one that doesn't care what people think...doesn't mince words...and could give a bleep less if people like it or not. I found it amusing, and it held my attention. So I bought it. I did NOT expect to find anything other than the same general diet info we always hear from weight loss books. I was WRONG.
First of all, this book is not fluff, which unfortunately most diet books are mostly full of...fluff. Inside of this chick lit looking, profanity laced book was a very well researched, informative and fully referenced literary work. There are more references in this book (scientific studies, research studies etc) than I have seen in many diet/health books. Also, it includes plenty of other resources like web sites, books, cookbooks, magazines etc. It may look like fluff, and it may read like a truck driver wrote it, but that is just clever marketing. At times it reads like a textbook because it carries so much serious information. So don't be fooled. They just knew how to get their book noticed, and it worked.
Last but not least, they are hard core vegetarians. This was another shocker. There was no way to know I was getting a book about animal cruelty and vegetarianism. The cover did not give it away and glancing through it quickly didn't do it either. They waited to approach the subject for several chapters into it. Another smart marketing move, as I may have put it down had I seen that initially.
I have never read any hard core detailed information on how animals are killed for food. They cited workers, quotes, insider info...it was disturbing--an understatement...for a moment I thought I had picked up the diary of a serial killer. It was just sick. Obviously I know animals have to die for me to get a Big Mac, but are we seriously killing them in the ridiculously sick and twisted manner described in this book??. If that is true, then I am horrified. I assumed it was like what happens when you take a pet to the vet and it needs to be euthanized. I mean, you wouldn't take your pet into the veterinarian to be put to sleep if you thought that first they were going to slam it against the wall a few times, shove something up its rectum, paralyze it from the neck down and poke its eyes out...just for fun...THEN put it to sleep. Any veterinarian doing that kind of unnecessary behavior would lose his license. So what is going on?? According to this book, prisoners sentenced to the death penalty get far nicer deaths, than the animals. If you read the info in this section it will definitely be a 'what the hell' moment....leaving you to wonder why it's necessary to be that horrific in the killing of the animals.
I guess this book left me feeling nauseated. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the info, but I'm definitely going to do some more research. I don't feel you can just dismiss people as being one of those crazy vegetarians. If what they're saying is true, then I need to know that.
Book Review: A desperate ploy... Summary: 1 Stars
I was very excited about reading this book because I thought it would give insight and motivation in a humorous manner. The name of the book is "Skinny Bitch" and it says it is a no nonsense way to make you skinny and fabulous. WELL...if I had known what the book is REALLY about I wouldnt have spent a cent on it! It is a desperate ploy to tell everyone that isnt a Vegan that they are stupid, dumb, ect. The entire book is about how eating meat and dairy is so bad and the government is hiding all these things. blah blah blah. They approach it in a rude, liberal abundant way. Them throwing around the F bomb all over the place doesnt help. So, if you are a mom wanting to buy this for your child.. DONT. If you research their "sources" you will find that one doctor out of 100 thinks how they do. So, to sum this up. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. A complete waste ot time and money.
Book Review: A fun book and a little shocking! Summary: 4 Stars
I was hoping for more "get skinny" tips in the practical sense, rather than a complete rejection of animal products. I don't agree that vegan is "the only way" to get skinny --or even the healthiest. I think they're right that buying organic and avoiding processed food is the way to go. For those who have little knowledge about what they're eating, their recommendations are great as well-- but seriously--- for the most part, who eats like that? I do think you will get skinny by following their recommendations, but it doesn't have to be that limiting. But if you want to really change your life---this is your book. The part of the book I loved best was the fact that they totally call you out on eating poorly and having excuses for it. No excuses! I needed to hear that, and the frank talk was really funny. It's a great read and very informative. As a real get skinny resource, I wouldn't say it would be my first choice.
