Book Reviews of Skippyjon JonesBook Review: A fun and engaging read-aloud Summary: 5 Stars
My children and I love this book! The character - Skippyjon Jones, aka El Skippito - is wonderfully conceived and endearing. The verse sections of the book are extremely catchy and immediately memorable. My boys, ages 5 & 7, want to repeat them over and over. (Warning: you may find these lines racing through your head as you go to bed!) I primarily recommend this as a read-aloud to capture El Skippito's Spanish accent. While my 7-year-old can read the book, that element is lost unless we read together.
Book Review: A fun children's book! Summary: 5 Stars
My kids love this book, and I love to read it to them. They really enjoy the active imagination that Skippyjon has; I really enjoy that it exposes them to Spanish. Our oldest has actually started branching out into other Spanish-language titles. Our 2 year old just loves the drawings. A fun book for the whole family!
I agree with the previous reviewer that a knowledge of Spanish is helpful. The only minus I would give the book is that it would be nice to have a pronounciation guide at the back for the Spanish words.
Book Review: A must have! Summary: 5 Stars
I am a senior in college and am going to be an Elementary school teacher. I am currently interning in a Kindergarten class and they love Skippyjon Jones.
I had to read it to them several times because they enjoy the accent and the songs so much. I have two students in my class who are from a hispanic background and they weren't offended by the story. In fact, they were laughing harder then anyone else! Skippyjon Jones is a book that will get kids to want to read. Our school book fair had Skippyjon Jones for sale and almost all of my class bought a copy to have at home. The parents say they are getting tired of reading it every night! Some of my students even had me show their mom and dad how they were supposed to do the voices....
Book Review: An imaginitive romp through "old Me-he-co" Summary: 5 Stars
I picked this up at the library solely because of its name...and boy was I glad I did. It is so funny and it is something that I can read to my 4 year old and my 7 year old and they both appreciate it. I've even taken it to read to both my son's 1st grade and 2nd grade classes. They all love it.
Knowing rudimentary Spanish is helpful, but for the most part even if you don't - you can figure it out based upon context clues and pictures (i.e. siesta, fiesta, crazy loco).
Great book - I can't wait until the next adventure in April.
Book Review: An utterly delightful book Summary: 5 Stars
This book, although obviously written for children, will appeal to anyone who loves cats. Skippyjon (what a cute name!) is a fearless Siamese kitty who fancies himself to be one tough hombre. The book chronicles an adventure he has with a band of chihuahuas, with Skippyjon being the hero (naturally) of the tale. The narrative is "bouncy" and would be great fun to read aloud to a child.
