Book Reviews of Skippyjon Jones

Book Review: Fantastic!
Summary: 5 Stars

Fantastic fun nonsense! We LOVE this book. Skippyjon Jones is adorable and uniquely himself. He makes you laugh and laugh. From Holy Frijoles to Mice & Beans.

What could be better than Mice & Beans?

Book Review: For dreamers everywhere
Summary: 3 Stars

A Siamese cat who would rather be a chihuahua?! Well, heck, I'm a cat person who thinks chihuahuas are overgrown rats, but I could not help but smile when I saw this book! Ms. Schachner made a delightfullly odd story full of, may I be honest, a moron's view of old Mexican bandit culture. And yet so many other things have done the same, and the resulting story is hilarious, imaginative, and a rush to read and the eccentric and creative little kitten grabs your attention and heart as he imagines himself as much more than a boring old Siamese kitten but the great swordsman El Skippitto, defender of the oppressed everywhere! Skippyjon is a true little boy despite the fact that he is a cat and does not let the little details of reality get in his way. His mother clearly adores him and one cannot blame her. Simply adorable!

Book Review: Fun Read Aloud!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Skippyjon Jones by Judy Schachner is a creative picture book that children in from pre-K through [...] will enjoy. Its main character is a Siamese kitty whose imagination turns him into a Chihuahua bandit in Mexico. The text is full of interactive chants and Spanish words and phrases that inspire the reader to interact with the story. Children will enjoy the rhymes in the text, while relating to Skippyjon's vivid imagination. The ending, in which Skippyjon's mother gives his a great big hug, rather than scolding him for making a mess, will leave children feeling happy. The watercolor illustrations work well with the text by adding to the humor in the book. The variety of vibrant and soft colors used highlight the actions taking place in the story.

Book Review: Fun book!
Summary: 5 Stars

My 6 yr old daughter was rolling in laughter when we read this together after bringing it home from the library. The part where Skippyjon Jones is bouncing on his bed and sees himself in the mirror and notices his big head and ears is what had us laughing the most.
The next week at the library we found the other Skippyjon Jones book (In the Dog House) and enjoyed that just the same. I hope Judy Schachner keeps the Skippyjon Jones adventures going.

Book Review: Fun to Read Aloud
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was so much fun to read aloud! My 4 year old son liked it and I just LOVED it from an adult perspective. My children are 1/4 Mexican, and I did not have a problem reading it to them.

Some of the other reviewers have said it is "racist", I am assuming because Skippyjon uses a Mexican accent when he is pretending to be "El Skippito". The accent is cute in this context, not degrading, and I consider myself overly sensitive to racism because all of my three children are multi-ethnic (African-American, Mexican, and Japanese between them).

I would also like to add that I have been to readings by Mexican-American writers who used the same Mexican accent as Skippyjon when presenting their own work. This was not their normal accent, but they used it as a device for creating a certain "feel" that was appropriate to the piece they were reading. The one that I am thinking of was about a famous Mexican "bandito", so Schachner's use of it seemed totally appropriate here, since that is exactly who Skippyjon is trying to imitate.

Overall, this is a wonderful book!
