I am reading the works of Iles trying to figure out why so many people seem to like them. Perhaps I started out with the wrong book, 'Footprints of God' and then followed it up with this, 'Sleep no More' and have managed to polish off Iles' stinkers. On the other hand, these two novels have left me with no sign that this character knows how to craft a plot. I was reminded very much of Dean Koontz. Both Koontz and Iles write breezy christian/noir/sci-fi/thrillers. Both writers skim the unusual worlds of Phillip K Dick and Raymond Chandler. Yet both writers pull in the reigns and tap into the meta novel,the novel you might expect from a writer trying to use every hollywood stereotype.
You might not agree with what I am saying here. If you don't, I think that it might be because you have just not read anything much better than this. Most of the pap out on the best seller lists feed off of each other and thus they start to sound the same. This is no different. Two of the better writers that you might find on the NY times list are Harlan Coben and the team of Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child. I would point you in the direction of these two writers if you are seeking something better than Iles. Coben is sort of a modern day Hitchcock. I would suggest that you start with one of Coben's later books and avoid any that star his earlier character Myron Bolitar. Preston/Child are very fun throw-away novelists. I would suggest that you start with the first book in their series of supernatural thrillers.
