SLEEPWALKING IN DAYLIGHT is of higher quality than much of the similarly themed "chick lit" novels currently published. The book is very readable probably because author Elizabeth Flock gives so many realistic details about her characters' lives that the reader begins to really care about them and anxiously turns the pages to find out what happens to them next.
The story is told in alternating chapters by forty-five year old Sam (Samantha) and her sixteen year old daughter Cammy. They live an upper middle class suburban life near Chicago but both mother and daughter have problems. Cammy was adopted by Sam and her husband as a two year old "crack" addicted baby and after a rocky beginning had a happy childhood but at the time the book begins is in the midst of nightmarish teenage years. She yearns to find her birth mother and rebels from her adoptive family by making herself up as a "goth", experimenting with drugs, and hanging out with people who are not exactly solid citizens. Sam is unhappy with her husband Mike who is apparently almost clinically depressed and she feels overwhelmed with Mike and Cammy's problems as well as caring for her eight year old twin sons and keeping up the perfect family facade she has carefully cultivated over the years.
Flock does a great job with the female characters as Cammy, Sam and several other minor female characters talk and behave in believable ways. The male characters are not nearly as well developed. Sam's husband Mike never really came alive to me and her "friend" Craig is even more poorly developed. The boys Cammy hangs out with seem to be just standard juvenile delinquents and we are given no real reasons as to why they act and react as they do. The ending is certainly not the "happily ever after" I was expecting and this darker choice makes the book more memorable and effective.
