Book Reviews of Slow Decay (Torchwood)Book Review: Very well written horror story Summary: 5 StarsThis is definitely the darkest one of the three Torchwood novels available at the moment. It is a well written horror novel. With that I mean, it has many shocking scenes including a lot of blood and gore but it is combined with good characterizations and within a storyline that is definitely not put together just to play with the emotions of the readers.
Most of the book is about the relationship between Gwen and Rhys. It is obvious that this book takes place during the beginning of the first season when first cracks appeared in their relationship but not the ugliness that happened later. Gwen did things in later Torchwood I am not sure if I will ever be able to forgive her for it. Gwen certainly loves Rhys very much but, as on TV, in spite of the best intentions at the beginning, things tend to get out of control and Gwen has to struggle to save a situation from becoming a complete disaster. In this book, she is shown more capable. She made a serious mistake, but so did Rhys. I found it touching to read how both of them first of all got into this mess because they wanted to save their relationship and that the story involving them had a happy end - for now. The reader is left with a sense of optimism. I wish I could have the same feeling now, after the end of the first season.
If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. As soon as the miracle weight loss cure appeared, I wondered, where is the catch? I expected it to be nasty but I had no idea how nasty it would get.
There is only one minor aspect that I am not very happy with. On the one hand, of course Jack is entitled to his opinion and I have heard it often enough. But on the other hand, I think telling overweight people in essence that pills are not the answer but you have to change your behaviour is at best simplistic, at worst insulting. People are overweight for a range of reasons, often more than one and the answer is usually not that simple. Pills alone are not the answer but if that treatment would have worked safely and would be available in reality, it would help a lot of people.
Now that I have finished all three books, I am hoping that there will be more.
Book Review: "Chap with Wings - five rounds rapid"! Summary: 3 StarsIn this third of the initial three Torchwood novels (at least going by the picture that builds up over the spines of the three books)the team find themselves investigating a diet clinic that turns people into uncontrollable feeding machines, as they are unwittingly ingesting alien parasites.
While 'Slow Decay' has its exciting moments sadly the plot is just too thin to fill the novel, and the tension is crucially undercut by the general level of stupidity of the characters - here we have characters who take a diet pill marked 'Start' that almost immediately turns them ravenous, yet it doesn't seemt to occur to anyone until about 30 pages towards the end that maybe taking the pill marked 'Stop' would be a good idea. #sigh#
The only other subplot of alien empathy technology also never satisfyingly gells into the novel as a whole, with a denouement concerning Toshiko's realisation of the properties of life triumphing over death seemingly coming out of nowhere, and having precious little thematic link with the main plot of over-eating.

Book Review: Fab! Summary: 4 StarsAfter starting with this book, i could not put it down. It is the best out of the three and had me griped from start to finish. My imagination was running wild and i could see the action happening.

Book Review: This is the Torchwood We Know and Love! Summary: 5 StarsThis book is brilliant. I brought it really cheap off the internet so wasn't expecting much. The first page was kinda boring so i was thinking of scrapping the book but i was wrong. After the first two pages this book has you gripped. It has plenty of action and suspense and enough twists to keep you guessing. 11 out of 10.
Book Review: So true Summary: 5 StarsThis book is so true to the characters the weird, but funny things they come out with at the wrong moments. The story is so clear its more like your watching or even being there than reading it and i couldn't stop reading it, i was sitting there reading it a midnight because i was engrossed. i haven't read a book for quite a while and this kept me hooked. it was exciting, though it was a bit annoying that it had several pages on one character then it change to another character e.g. Owen then to Gwen, but that just gripped you more. it was very graphic, especially the gory bits and kind a creepy. i kept thinking it had happened to me and i was going to meet one of the cannibals in my closet!
