Book Reviews of Smart Women

Book Review: A Fool Never Learns...
Summary: 3 Stars

Smart women don't give up, no matter what; we are invincible. That's what the song says. Why else is Mother Earth called in the feminine staus? Men can't live without us. They'd be at each other's throats if they don't have that little woman (or significant other) at home, devoted to them. At least, that is what these transplants in Boulder want to think. They are middle age, still have their looks, but part of the book is reminiscences of mother/daughter talks during their childhoods.

They appear to be a breed apart, out there in the middle of nowhere, and yet they are just like the successful women in Knoxville, Tennessee. Control is the key to success for Francine (B.B.), Margo, Miranda, Clare, all of whom are jealous of each other and make catty remarks. They depend on hot tubs, spa treatments -- even acupuncture which could do wonders for the mind as well as the body -- to ease their stress away. They all feel that you don't give up, but to keep making plans for the future.

These are divorced women with teenagers at home and parents still alive to keep them hopping all across the continent. Some spend Christmas in Hawaii, others go to Florida or L.A. (where there are no intellectuals, only movie stars). Their favorite thing to hear from the men they foolishly get involved with: "You're my fantasy woman." Yes, they are living fantasy lives and not fantastic. They bemoan the fact that we always have children with the wrong person. Why's that? Wink would know!

The children don't suffer but make the situations more touchy and problematic. This is real life; the truth is always easier to take than the imagination. When things can't get any worse, they learn to "count your blessings" and that it is just "all in the game called love." True love can't be beat, and so they keep searching for Mr. Right.
