Book Reviews of SmokeBook Review: Funny and interesting Summary: 5 Stars
Westlake proves that he can write a witty and interesting farce outside of the Dortmunder series. True, his comic capers outside the Dortmunder series are hit and miss, but this one is a good one. The characters are well-done and humurous on several levels. Good read.
Book Review: GREAT READING, ONE OF WESTLAKE'S FINEST Summary: 5 Stars
FUNNY, PRECISE BOOK, COULD BE TRUE
Book Review: Good, but elements seem derivative Summary: 4 Stars
Overall, I enjoyed Smoke. However, the basic plot - man accidentally becomes invisible and is chased by people who want to use him - seems straight out of Chevy Chase's The Invisible Man. Even elements of the story are taken from the movie - being able to see the food digesting, using make-up, the make-up coming off when eating. I don't know - did Westlake write the screenplay for the movie? Was he involved at all? Westlake does bring in some new elements, however and makes this an enjoyable read. I've rarely been disappointed with a Westlake novel!
Book Review: Great humor, fun characters - Westlake's a pro Summary: 4 Stars
Despite some of the only fair reviews quoted below, I feel this is an excelelnt novel. An invisible man (who's a thief), on the run from tobacco companies, various hoodlums, and the scientists who created him, makes for a fun romp.Westlake's use of humor is excellent, and you really ENJOY reading about these characters. My only complaint is that it was too short! I wanted more of Freddie and Peg's adventures. Here's hoping for a sequel!
Book Review: I never thought I'd put down a Westlake book Summary: 3 Stars
I have loved every other book of his that I have read. Smoke, however, is a pretty apt analogy for the substance of this one. Sure there are a few chuckles, but frankly I didn't care enough about any of the people in this story to find out how it turns out. The tobacco industry machinations get pretty boring. Great potential, but a dud.
