Book Review: "Black Beauty" for Cowgirls
Summary: 5 Stars
_Smoky_ was this horse-crazy little girl's favorite horse book, moreso even than _Black Beauty_, _Misty of Chincoteague_, and the _Flicka_ series. Twenty years later, I still think it's sort of interesting as a novel that takes place during a transitional period between the horse-centered old West and the truck-centered new West.
To those who gave it one star: I do not condone the use of racial epithets or stereotypes but 1) the book was published in 1926 and most literature from this time is badly dated in this respect, and 2) "half-breed Mexican" technically refers to a mestizo, or someone of both Spanish and Native American heritage (although I agree that it was used disparagingly in this context). It does not refer to Latinos as a whole. Also, to those who complained that it was "boring", overly detailed, or that they did not understand the "Western words": You missed a fine opportunity to educate yourselves a little about Western history.
