Book Review: "If you don't have any principles, and if you don't have faith, you can't be happy at all."
Summary: 5 Stars
As I was reading this book, every now and then I rated the book in my head- and believe me it was either 1/5 or 5/5. I dont want to repeat what many of the reviewers already wrote, but this book is really either a challange to continue reading or a story in which you are just addicted to. Only when I finished the book did I realize that If I read his work in Turkish I believe it would've felt much better. I really loved reading about this unending conflict between nationalists and Islamic "radicals" in Turkey. This polarization is a serious problem.
First off, one of the attracting elements found in this book were Pamuk's cultural references. The abandoned Armenian houses, Russian built houses and so on.
Also, I was not much fond of Ka, the main protagonist in this book, but I was intrigued by his visit to Kars, a city in Eastern Anatolia, which turned out to be a complete lifechanger for him. Towards the end I felt utter hatred towards Ipek, the lady whom he loved. It angered me that Ka forgave her "mistakes" and she couldnt forgive him for leaking the info of Blue's whereabouts.
Lastly, Pamuk is unique. He doesnt have a simple plot. It has its ups and downs. He tells you what will happen, but he tortures you well, because you don't know HOW it will happen.
Great writer, the book is much recommended !
