Book Review: A Dated Simplistic Youth Book

Snow Bound was written in 1973 about a teenage boy and girl who are stranded in the snow in New York.
I decided to read this short youth book as a diversion from the typical books that I've been reading in 2010. I was surprised at how dated this book was, even though 37 years ago doesn't sound like that much to me.
The gist of the story was that a teenaged boy was driving a car in the winter and picked up a hitch hiker, who happened to be a teenage girl. They were caught in a blizzard in New York and then became stranded out in the country for two weeks. They tried to get back to civilization while suffering tremendously in the snow, wet, and cold.
Every now and then I will read a youth book because they are also fun for adults. This one was not only written for young people, but also sounded like the author was inexperienced in writing. It reminded me of a person who was/is successul in his own career and decided that "now that I'm successul, I guess I will just go ahead and whip off a children's book, type person 'cause I'm so successful".
Well, he was successful. To give Mazer credit, I will say that I have read several 'stuck in the snow' type books and they tend to tell it like it is. That is, boring, cold, fruitless, and tedious. After days, weeks, or months of suffering, the characters survive. The reader of such books suffers page after page and survives when reading the last page of the book! Mazer succeeds in this regard.
