Book Reviews of Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems: New, Revised, and Expanded EditionBook Review: REDISCOVER YOUR SANITY Summary: 5 StarsAs a parent and an educator I never dreamed I'd reach the point of "Ferberizing" my baby. After all, wasn't this the toxic method that forced you to let your baby cry all night alone in a cold, dark prison-like bed? As a new Mom I was committed to the theoretical viewpoints of Dr. Sears and his colleagues, and was determined to make the family bed work for us. After 10 months of perseverence with little to no sleep at night I knew I had to make a drastic change for my own sanity. That is when I bought the Ferber book in an attempt to find a solution to our nighttime woes. As it turned out, I read the book in one night and was completely wrong about the process Dr. Ferber advocates. His logical, developmentally sound and behavioristic approach helped me to understand the improper sleep associations I was developing in my young one. After one week we were well on the road to recovery. I can now be a better parent to my child during the day since I am getting adequate sleep at night. This book has changed our lives! To all those who cringe at my words, I should add that I am still a staunch advocate of the family bed...if it works for you. I would never change the bonding my baby and I experienced sleeping together the first few months. However, there comes a time when you need to assess the health and happiness of the family unit. If you have reached the end of your rope at night, this book is the right one for you.
Book Review: This book was a sanity saver! Summary: 4 StarsWe bought this book when our child was 3.5 months old. He had slept through the night once so we knew he was capable. However, we couldn't get him to sleep without rocking him and then sneaking him into his crib. Dr. Ferber's book explained why what we were doing was wrong and how it was effecting our son and what we could do to correct it. He now goes down on his own without a paci and minimal fuss.
Book Review: An excellent book with practical advice that works. Summary: 5 StarsThis book should be standard reading for all pregnant families. I used it to help my 10 week old learn to go to sleep in her own cot, in her own room and to be put down awake. It worked! It gives real practical advice for parents who want their children to learn to sleep properly and well. I followed the advice given and Elli took two days to learn how to be put down awake and get herself off to sleep with little or no grizzling. I can't comment on the advice given for other problems (children getting up in the night, children who think day is for sleeping and night is for playing, etc) as I haven't yet needed to try them out but the advice in these areas seemed to be practical rather than wishy washy. If you have looked up this review then you obviously need some sleep - I'd recommend that you buy this book.
Book Review: Having read numerous books on the subject, this one is best. Summary: 5 StarsAfter 9 months of allowing our daughter to sleep with us in our bed, my husband and I decided it was time to transition her to her own crib/room. We were apprehensive about doing this, since past tries when she was younger had produced no results. Dr. Ferber's book provided us with the information and confidence we needed. He provides excellent examples of other parents and children who have struggled with this scenario and includes specific and detailed approaches to teach you to teach your child how to fall asleep and stay asleep on his/her own. He also discusses strategies for day-time naps and the importance of developing good sleep patterns. I purchased several books on the subject and found Dr. Ferber's to be the most informative and well-written. His methods are by no means cruel or insensitive, in fact, we were able to stay sane while implementing them and found they worked wonders for our situation. A must-read if you are having the same troubles.
Book Review: Ferber: Read, and Believe, and Thou Shalt Be Saved. Summary: 5 StarsAs a mother of three children, all of whom come from a family that, by nature, sleeps lightly and little, I had my work cut out for me. But thank heaven for Dr. Ferber, whose intelligence, scientific diligence and plain old common sense gave us the deeper understanding of the sleep process we needed to make it all work. This book is worth more than all other parental advice books put together. We couldn't have survived without it. I pity those parents who lived in the Dark Ages B.F. (before Ferber).
