Book Review: "I was born beautiful"

The Gist:
Darcy Rhone thought she was living a charmed life. She had a fabulous job (in PR, of course), a fabulous fiance (gorgeous, ivy-league lawyer), and more designer clothes than Paris Hilton. In fact, she was fabulous from the top of her perfectly coifed head to the tips of her Jimmy Choos. Could life be any more charming or fabulous?
Then, one day shortly before her wedding, she visits her best friend only to find her fiance hiding in a closet..sans pants.
To make matters worse, she discovers her fling with her fiance's friend has resulted in a pregnancy!
What's a fabulous girl to do? Dump her fiance, quit her job, pack her Louis Vuitton and head to London to start a new, even-more-fabulous life.
Something Blue is a light, easy read. As fun as any other novel in the chic lit genre. Though, I did like Ms. Giffin's Baby Proof better.
The Good:
Emily Giffin is a talented writer. She is deft at creating characters and crafting interesting, believable, engaging dialogue. Her plots are simple enough, and yet, keep the reader involved until the very last word.
The Bad:
Darcy Rhone, the heroine, had absolutely no redeeming qualities through the first half of the book. She was crass, crude, self-absorbed, selfish, cruel, snotty, and insufferably ignorant. In case my laundry list of her horrible traits didn't give it away, you need to know that I hated her. Hated her. I laothed her from her very first utterance: "I was born beautiful." Because I felt so strongly about Darcy Rhone, so negatively, I found her transformation difficult to believe. After a hundred plus pages of her cheating on her fiance, screaming like a lunatic, spouting profanities like the Trevi Fountain spouts water, I just found it hard to believe she would magically transform into a maternal, thoughtful person. One friend tells her that she is selfish and she suddenly decides to turn over a new leaf, to start acting like a considerate, kind human being? I didn't buy it.
And, the just plain UGLY:
The first few chapters of Something Blue are filled with self-absorbed, immoral characters who seem to spend inordinate amounts of time having casual sex, imbibing copious quantities of alcohol, and acting in ways that make it painfully difficult for any reader to uncover a single redeeming quality about them. Though I have no problem reading books or watching tv shows about free, independent, liberated women (am, in fact, a rabid Sex and the City fan even all these years later), I was put off by Darcy's frequent profane, childish, and inane oubursts. I could almost hear her screeching (which is a credit to Ms. Giffin's ability to sketch a character).
The bottom line:
Emily Giffin's outstanding writing and well-paced plot make this book a great beach read. Readers who have delicate ears and sensibilities might take offense at Darcy's promiscuity and profanity. However, readers who like the fun and escape offered by books of the chic lit genre will appreciate Something Blue!
