Book Reviews of Something BlueBook Review: Better than Something Borrowed Summary: 4 Stars
Although I was not a fan of the plot line covered in Giffin's first book, Something Blue, I did enjoy her writing style and ability to tell an intriguing story.
Something Blue is the continuation of Something Borrowed, but from the perspective of Darcy Rhone who was a secondary character in the first novel. I was skeptical as to whether I would want to read about Darcy since she is portrayed as vain and materialistic. But as the story unfolds, Darcy moves to the UK, makes new friends, and slowly realizes that things she placed importance on weren't important at all.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading other novels by Giffin.
Book Review: Better than expected... Summary: 5 Stars
In Something Borrowed, Giffin does an exceptional job making the reader identify with Rachel -- despite the fact that she is having an affair with her best friend Darcy Rhone's fiance Dex. Part of the reason that it works is Giffin's skillful crafting of Darcy's personality. She is beautiful, but self-centered, shallow and mean. As the plot unfolds, you can't help but hope that Dex ends up with Rachel and not Darcy.
So when I saw that Giffin was going to explore Darcy's point of view in her second book, I was sort of appalled. I mean, Darcy was horrible in the Something Borrowed. However, in Something Blue Giffin takes her ability to develop her characters to another level. I loved (in a sadistic way) the first two hundred pages where Darcy receives her comeupance. As a reader, you can feel a little relief to see that no, things aren't perfect for Darcy anymore and she truly has gotten herself into a situation that her looks can't get her out of. Yet Giffin manages to develop a character that you can end up rooting for in the end. Sometime after she arrives in London she does begin to become a better person. Like other readers, I would have found her transformation a little more believable if it had been a little less of an "epiphany." However, the end result, a Darcy Rhone that readers can cheer for, is worth the jouney.
Book Review: Better than the original! Summary: 5 Stars
There are few cases in life where the sequel is better than the original. This is one of those rare cases.
I first read "Something Borrowed," and I liked it well enough. But over all I considered it fluffy and not tremendously inspired. I didn't find it pulling at my heart-strings and I certainly didn't find myself vested in the characters. Nonetheless, I bought "Something Blue," craving the same quick-fix of fluffy chic-lit. I expected nothing better than the original but was happily surprised!
This time around we really get to know Darcey. We understand more of her background and what makes her tick. And in the midst of it all we come to root for her and genuinely hope life turns out well for her and her baby. I'll even confess to having shed a tear or two while reading this book.
All I can say is: read this book!!! It makes for an enjoyable light read that leaves you feeling surprisingly satisfied when all is said and done.
Book Review: Better then the first.... Summary: 5 Stars
I didn't think I would like this book better then Something Borrowed because I wasn't crazy about Darcy, but this book really brings out a different side of Darcy. Many milestones and realizations confront Darcy. By the end the book Darcy had grown on me. Spectacular!
Book Review: Blah for "Something Blue" Summary: 3 Stars
As much as I loved "Something Borrowed," this novel fell flat for me. I guess I just never warmed up to Darcy. Her sudden transformation was too "all of a sudden." A person as bratty as Darcy, just does not seem to change overnight like this. But, I still like the way the author paints her characters and the story. She did a great job of making me dislike Darcy in the first place.
