On 22nd February 1943 three students from the White Rose a small underground resistance movement determined to defy Hitler's brutal Nazi regime were executed by guillotine. One of them was a 21-year-old Munich university student called Sophie School, who courageously fought against the brutal Nazi regime, not with bombs, but with words, expressed in leaflets that proclaimed a passionate desire to live in a free society. Her brave and principled stand made Sophie Scholl a legend in Germany. She was voted `Women of the Century' by readers of the popular German women's magazine Brigitte in 1999 and she came 4th - along with her equally brave brother Hans Scholl- in `Greatest Germans', a popular German TV programme, based on a nation wide phone vote in 2003. In 2005 the final five days of her short life was the subject of an award-winning German film called Sophie Scholl: The Final Days. This first major biography of this heroine of the German resistance by a leading British historian draws on a wide variety of original documents, including the letters and diaries of Sophie Scholl, key Gestapo interrogation files, court documents and interviews with survivors to tell the whole fascinating, shocking, but ultimately up-lifting life story of a principled young women who bravely opposed Hitler's terrifying Nazi regime and was executed for her beliefs. It is a story that will stand for all time.
