Derek Strange has always lived in Washington DC. Despite its size, Derek finds DC to be a small enough town in that he constantly bumps into someone he knows. He loves living here. Once a cop, Strange is now a private investigator aiding anyone who requests his services in finding solutions to kidnappings, murders, thefts, you name it. He feels he owes it to this town. Newly married and a Pop Warner football coach, one of his missions is to keep kids out of "the life." Terry Quinn is his partner. A white guy, with a past and a temper, living in a predominantly black town, Quinn admires Strange and is a loyal friend. This novel finds both Strange and Quinn sleuthing through the dark, desperate, and murderous streets of some of the most dangerous sections of Washington in search of clues that may be used to release a known criminal, Granville Oliver. There is no doubt of his guilt. Strange knows this but rather attempts to save his life out of both guilt and despair. Guilt, due to the fact that Strange had killed Oliver's father years earlier thus depriving him of the guidance that may have kept him from the current circumstances in the first place. Despair, due to barrage of political and social circumstances that have been partially responsible for keeping a large group of people from escaping their lot in life. Pelecanos does more than write about the streets of this city. Through Strange's eyes he lives the scenes allowing the reader to assume an active like role in the exciting plot that will keep you reading and reading.
