Book Reviews of Starship TroopersBook Review: A Great story, with some intellectual content to match Summary: 5 Stars
This is one good book. Aside from the exciting and interesting story, it presents some interesting views on society, duty, democracy, and the military machine. For a former Corporal with a tour in Bosnia like myself it is one of the few occasions where I have read a book that really captures an "Army Spirit" and manages to communicate it well. The "Moral Philosophy" contained in it gives food for thought, and makes some interesting points though you might not agree with them, though if you can't seperate your opinion from some interesting intellectual material this book is not for you. A great book, and a great read. I just wish it was longer. Evert-Jan C. Duindam
Book Review: A Leadership Classic for Grunts, Mud Puppies, and Civilians Summary: 5 Stars
In this book, RAH explores the question "What is freedom worth?" Using one of the characters he states, "Nothing of value is free." This theme is a ribbon running though the book . It is just as thought provoking today as it was when it was written - Do we own our nation something in return for our privileges? Should we have "rights" without being expected to pay for them? Set in the early twenty-second century, the book presents the development of young and naive Johnnie Rico. It follows him though the horrendous boot camp of the Mobile Infantry and onto the battle field. As he is exposed to new concepts and experiences, he is challenged to come to grips with the internal issues of personal courage, self-discipline, and the boundaries and benefits of loyalty. The issues addressed are not science fiction but real and must be faced by every person in society, whether in a position of authority or not. Although presented in a military setting, these issues and the ideas expressed will provide rich food for thought to people who want to be managers and leaders. It emphasises that you can't "do" without first "being." Any leader, civilian or military, Non-commissioned or commissioned officer. junior or senior executive will benefit from reading this book. I strongly recommend it to anyone who will ever be in charge of or reporting to another person. This book demonstrates Robert Heinlein's imagination and ability at their best
Book Review: A MUST READ Summary: 5 Stars
In today's videogame/instant satisfaction society, reading a book is a tough thing to do for young people. They should all be forced to read this one however. Outstanding job that makes everyone who reads it think. And that is sometimes painful for the youth of the U.S. I am personally glad I read it. I don't agree with every last sentence in the book, but darn near. Truly a must read for young adults.
Book Review: A MUST READ for Political Theory Students! Summary: 5 Stars
Dispense with the great sci-fi action and plot, and you still have one of the most unique perspectives on human history and government ever written. This book is an absolute must-read for any student of government. Read it, and see if you aren't compelled to agree with Heinlein's conclusions.
Book Review: A Masterpiece of Science Fiction Summary: 5 Stars
Briefly put: A friend gave me this book, simply because he believed I should read it. I have since passed on this legacy and buy this book for all of my friends. I have never read a more fascinating book.
