Book Review: "Losing My Yesterdays"
Summary: 5 Stars
This is an incredible undertaking, a book about a 50 year old linguistic psychology professor from Harvard who starts a slow descent into early-onset Alzheimer's disease. In her community -- where intelligence is the highest valued commodity -- she is ostracized with a scarlet "A" and must decide the ultimate question -- is life worth it? Or not?
She asks herself: "What if I wake up and don't know who my husband is? What if I don't know where I am or recognize myself in the mirror? When will I no longer be me? Is my soul and spirit immune to the ravages of Altzheimer's?"
There are searing scenes that will remain with me for a long, long time: when Alice forgets how to make her favorite pudding Christmas recipe. When she confuses the black rug near her door for a gaping hole that will swallow her up. When she attends a Harvard symposium and asks a piercing question -- one that earns her admiration -- and then asks the same question a few minutes later, not understanding why others aren't impressed. When she becomes inconsolable because she thinks her sister -- who was killed much earlier in a car accident -- has just died.
And then there's the moment that hits the reader in the gut: Alice programs in her Blackberry five simple questions (What month is it? Where do you live? Where is your office? When is your daughter's birthday? How many children do you have?") She consistently answers these questions each day until one day...when she can't.
I recommend this highly for anyone who has ever known anyone with Altzheimer's...and for anyone who hasn't. It's a probing look at what it means to be human.
