Book Review: Loretta the Enabler
Summary: 3 Stars

Many years ago I enjoyed and learned from the author's first book. I can say the same for this one.

In babyhood, Loretta was clobbered over the head---accidentally---by a neighbor that I suspect was drunk, although the author leaves that to speculation. Loretta's parents could not afford medical help for their baby. Loretta suffered for years. Yet today Loretta Lynn campaigns for Republicans who oppose tax-funded health care for the indigent. In her book, Loretta declares, "If I was dying of cancer, I'd steal pain medicine as fast as I stole the watermelons all those years ago."

Despite Loretta's political contradictions, her honesty in relating her role as an enabler (a term she never used in the book) for a substance abuser may benefit other enablers. When hard-core enablers look in the mirror, they will see Loretta Lynn's sorrowful eyes. Her devotion to the alcoholic she married when she was thirteen years old is a mystery to me: "...a drunkard's dream if I ever did see one!" (Quote is from a song called "Up On Cripple Creek;" NOT by Loretta Lynn.)

Book Review: BITTERSWEET MEMORIES
Summary: 5 Stars

I REC'D THIS BOOK FOR CHRISTMAS AND READ IT IN 2 NIGHTS!! LORETTA WAS BRUTALLY HONEST IN THIS MEMOIR AND HELD NO PUNCHES (AT TIMES-LITERALLY!) AN AMAZING STORY OF A STRONG AND HARD-WORKING WOMAN. SHE IS THE FIRST ONE TO ADMIT THAT HER FAMILY LIFE WITH HER CHILDREN SUFFERED, AND SHE MUST HAVE BEEN A SAINT TO EVER PUT UP WITH HER HUSBAND'S ADULTRY AND SQUANDERING OF THE MONEY SHE WORKED SO HARD FOR, ALL THE WHILE STAYING FAITHFUL TO HIM. LORETTY....GOD BLESS YA!

Book Review: Wow!
Summary: 5 Stars

Ms. Cox did an excellent job of capturing Loretta Lynn's voice, and what a story. Loretta laid bare her feelings and gave her opinions without concern of how others might perceive her. This well-written book makes readers feel like we're sitting across the table as Loretta talks to us.

Book Review: A fast, interesting read
Summary: 4 Stars

I have the utmost love, respect and admiration for Loretta Lynn, a true country music icon. "Coal Miner's Daughter" is a movie I can watch over and over. But altho I'm fascinated to gain insight into the personal lives of "the rich and famous", I was surprisingly shocked by amount of dysfunction in this country legend's life. (For example, her husband slept with her brother's wife and years later, fooled around with his son's girlfriend!) Much is made of her amazingly inspiring rags to riches story, but at what cost to Loretta? Should we really admire the personal side of her life as she stayed with a abusive, womanizing, alcoholic husband? Loretta freely admits that her marriage had negative affects on all her children. Is this really a lifestyle we'd want for any of the loved ones in our lives? Yet, having raised these issues, I give this book high ratings for its brutal honesty.....altho I found it curious that Loretta never once came right out and stated that she never cheated on her husband, in my opinion, she skirted around that issue (but kudos to her if she was faithful). Parts of the book seemed fuzzy with details but all in all this is a fast, interesting read.

Book Review: Still Woman Enough
Summary: 5 Stars

I just read this book and found it delightful. I have always loved Loretta Lynn and thought her to be like family. I watched Coal Miner's Daughter and fell in love with it. I knew the movie probably had left some things out or added some moments that wasn't right. But if you only listen to Ms. Lynn in her speech and her singing, you can find that she is an honest woman and down to earth. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the part about the wringing of the chicken neck and the tourists. Some people just go into a supper market and buy meats, they don't really know what the process use to be for others. This book is about life. Thanks for sharing the moments with us. I wanted to wake up this morning and go to Hurricane Mills and see her. Been here in Nashville for two years and haven't really seen many people. Did go to the Opry twice to take my mom but Ms Lynn wasn't preforming. This book is a keeper. You won't forget the memories.
