Book Reviews of Stillness SpeaksBook Review: A Gentle Movement into Silence Summary: 5 Stars
If you have read The Power of Now or A New Earth, this book does not say anything new. What it does do, though, is help lull your mind into a wonderful state of silence as you read. It makes for a weak book (for the thinking mind), but an amazing reading experience.
Book Review: A Great Book with Intuitively Recognizable Truths Summary: 5 Stars
"Stillness Speaks" is a surprisingly good follow up to "The Power of Now". The message of being present and liberating oneself from the imprisonment of thought is largely the same, but the format of this book is more compact and accessible and also places Tolle's message in more specific contexts.
In "Stillness Speaks", Eckhart Tolle replaces the Q&A format found in "The Power of Now" with a direct and pithy narrative style modeled on Sutras. The first chapter essentially provides the book's entire message while subsequent ones place that message in more specific contexts such as how to bring stillness, awareness, and compassion to work or relationships.
This book, like its predecessor contains much truth. It is the kind of truth that you don't really have to think about because either you'll recognize it intuitively or you won't. While I found both "Stillness Speaks" and "The Power of Now" to be useful, powerful books, I was also a little put off by the author's subtle tone of righteous arrogance. A small but significant amount of the "energy" in each book is directed toward establishing Tolle's credentials as a guru. This, along with the intense sales and marketing found on his home page, seems wasteful, contradictory, and unnecessary.
Despite, these misgivings, I highly recommend this book for its invaluable teachings. The message has always bee here regardless of who continues to bring it or how it arrives. I understand that Tolle's next book is about bringing consciousness to one's flatulent behavior and that its title will be "Stillness Squeaks".
Book Review: A Handy Reference to Staying on Track Summary: 5 Stars
At first glance "Stillness Speaks" may seem like less of a "real book" than "The Power of Now" or "A New Earth". It is smaller in size, shorter and does not have the same kind of continuity in the sense of going on an inward journey. Yet that is exactly what appeals to me about it. This is the kind of book I can place on my nightstand, open to any page, read a few ideas to ponder and put away for the night (or day).
For someone who is struggling to integrate the concepts in Tolle's other books, this one may not have much appeal. For for those who have done the inner work, who have been on the journey for a while, this book offers succulent reminders of ways to continually bring ourselves back to appreciating every moment and manifestation of life. For example, after writing the last sentence I randomly opened the book to page 72 and read, "Sometimes surrender means giving up trying to understand and becoming comfortable with not knowing." This is such a simple idea, profound and yet a tremendous challenge for most seekers.
This is not a book to read from cover to cover. It is a book to ponder a bit at a time. The ideas presented are so rich with meaning that trying to absorb it by simply reading would render the mind dull and bloated. It is a meditation tool, a garden of ideas, any one of which has the potential to expand consciousness.
Book Review: A Mistake To Publish Now Summary: 1 Stars
Well, Mr. Tolle has really disappointed me this time. I was thinking that this book had something special to it and an important message to share, but I was wrong! Dead wrong! What this book is, is simply marketing and salesmanship. What happened to the Eckart Tolle of old who explained to readers valuable concepts with passion and love. This book is nothing like that. It is just a bunch of loose paragraphs put together in a jumbled form that have no comparison to his earlier work. I feel betrayed as a reader and I wish I had never spent the time reading this book.
Book Review: A Must read Summary: 5 Stars
If you have ever read other books by Mr. Tolle or are just starting out - this is a wonderful little book. You can pick it up and open it any where and have a quick read - or start from beginning and work your way through. I leave it up to you to decide if the words in the book ring true for you - they certainly do for me.
