The Quilt

Amos Lassen

Cleve Jones began the idea of an AIDS quilt in 1987 as a way to memorialize two friends who were taken by the disease. The Quilt has since become a witness of people with AIDS. It has traveled all over the world and has been displayed in every American city, Whether or not you know someone whose panel is sewn into The Quilt, seeing it as one of the more emotional experiences that a person can have. Here is Cleve Jones's document of how the project came to be.
The Quilt now has close to 50,000 panels and it has reached the status of being one of out most important memorials. It is based on the singular concept--recording the names of those that were lost to us by AIDS. By doing this the statistics take on a human face. Jones, himself, stitched the first panel as a memorial to his best friend. This is Jones's memoir and he writes about the modern history of gay life. It is a story that touches your heart as we read how Cleve Jones became a gay activist and he writes candidly about the anger he felt. He writes about his transformation from a wild gay youth to someone who saw how all people are connected. This is more than a memoir; it is a lesson in gay history and an eyewitness account of what was happening in America. And Jones has seen a great deal -murder, hate crimes, inequality and he became an activist, a mourner, a rioter, a survivor and an ambassador of hope. He sees himself as an ordinary man who responded to extraordinary circumstances in the only way he knew how. He reminds me of many things that I have forgotten or put in the back of my mind. This is a painful book but it is also one that needs to be read by all--gay and straight alike.
