Book Review: An American Detective/cop/mystery Novel with substance
Summary: 4 Stars
This is maybe the first detective/mystery novel by a U.S. writer (although I'm not an expert) that deals with the true dark side of humanity in a way that approaches the sparse, desperation of some of the European models like Simenon or the various Scandanavian writers lately in the news. Parker created a protagonist that deals with suffering of victims and the pathology of the bad guys while having his own dark side and inner demons (how you could be a police chief and NOT have that side in real life, at least, is beyond me. Since Jesse Stone IS the Paradise police department, he is also its chief homicide detective among his other functions. Nothing is black and white about this novel nor about Jesse Stone, and in that regard, we have a narrative that does not cater to the simple-minded reader, or the simple-minded dichotomous values of much of American culture like rich (good), poor (bad), work hard (good), weakness (bad), etc. The only 'deficiency' in the book as I see it is the portrayal of a banal, vacuous psycho-serial murder couple, although Parker has perhaps created this portrayal intentionally--a healthy change from the 'outlaw' romantic image of so many pimps, killers, and drug dealers among us.
