Book Review: The worst book on Jackson ever concocted

Of the many works of hagiography devoted to Stonewall Jackson, this unquestionably is the most ludicrous. I am one of the nation's leading Civil War historians and thus feel qualified to comment on the merits of this work. So, let me get this straight. Jackson was the Black man's friend because he ran a "school" of sorts in bible studies for Black slaves. This is the same Jackson who believed that God was on the side of the South and that all Southern victories were attributable to God's will - a South that was fighting to perpetuate slavery. And Jackson as a kind-hearted man because of his faith? Hardly. Just read some of the contemporaneous writings of his subordinate officers and his troops. Jackson's penchant for finding scapegoats - unjustly - for his defeats new no bounds. In Jackson's mind, his victories were God's well, but his defeats, well, those had to be the fault of a subordinate. Not Jackson's fault mind you. My apologies for the tone of this review; it's hardly my practice to invoke invective. But this sad work demands it.
