Book Reviews of Stop the InsanityBook Review: The Truth About Health, Fitness - and how YOU can do it! Summary: 5 Stars
Like so many, I have tried the diets - I thought I knew it all, did all that calorie counting stuff. IT JUST DOESN'T WORK! Susan Powter smashes through the myths and misinformation of the diet & fitness industry, explaining why every calorie reducing/starvation diet is doomed to fail in the long-term. She makes it all so simple and shows you how food can become your friend, not something you have to deny yourself or agonise over. I am following her advice and as a result, I'm getting fitter, leaner, feeling great and enjoying as much food as I want - whenever I want it. It's soooo much fun! Much of it is common sense, but she tells you how to avoid the pitfalls and cons, especially where food labelling is concerned. She also teaches the MOST EFFECTIVE way of getting the body you want. There are times when you think this woman is a little crazy! (She even says so herself) But you will come to realise that every line is relevant in making you understand where she came from, what she put up with and how she survived it all to become the wonderful person and teacher she now is. When I read her story; starting out 18+ stone (250+ pounds), alone, broke and miserable - then to the day she went shopping and bought a size 8, black string bikini - I couldn't help the tears. It gets me every time I re-read it. You too often see reviews which say "This book will change your life...". Well this book will NOT change your life if you only read HALF of it, or if you don't FOLLOW the advice properly. However, if you buy into Susan's philosophy and stick with it (at least 85% of the time!) you WILL improve - it's that good. The results are tremendous, but even better is the freedom from diet agony and knowing that you won't ever have to go through it again - that and all the many other benefits of health, strength and energy! If I could speak with Susan, I would tell her that I am learning to enjoy the process, I'm watching my body improve and I'm feeling very pleased with myself. I have a long way to go yet (only started a couple of months ago), but for the first time in my life I'm getting slimmer without being hungry or cutting out beer! Friends and colleagues are noticing and asking me "how?" and I'm spreading the word. I'm on course for that black string bikini (not I concept I have ever dared to entertain before) and to Susan Powter, I say thankyou, thankyou, THANKYOU!
Book Review: The best kept secret is finally revealed Summary: 5 Stars
This book is a must for anyone who wants an answer to a better body no matter what size you are or how much you want to lose. I am talking from experience. I lost 80 pounds and went on every non realistic diet and finally someone figured out how to be fit, healthy, and lean in a world where eating is a social function. I get chills every time I talk about what Susan Powter is screaming out at everyone. If you read this book you cannot walk away from it and not learn the lesson of food. This book will make you laugh, cry, and it will change your life.
Book Review: The only thing that worked... Summary: 5 Stars
I can't pinpoint what it is about Susan Powter and her book that made me so motivated, but whatever it is, it got me moving! And I mean moving. I was doing nothing all day but watching soap operas surrounded by comfort foods. The first time I read Susan's book I started reading around 7 pm in my very messy bedroom, which matched my life, a total mess. I didn't go to sleep that night, I could not put the book down!! By 8 am breakfast had been served, all the laundry in the NEIGHBORHOOD had been done and my own bedroom, which often reflects my mood, was spotless. If you lack motivation, you are probably not reading this review right now, it is probably someone who cares about you. I urge, no urge is not the right word... I SCREAM AT YOU: GET THIS BOOK!! IT IS THE WAY TO A HEALTHY BODY, LOOKING AND FEELING BETTER! I wish everyone out there who needs this book could have it...
Book Review: Well, she's been there Summary: 3 Stars
I don't agree with everything in this book, but Powter does have an edge since she's been fat. Her story of her fat years, about feeling miserable and isolated and the quotes from other women (how they feel invisible being fat when people won't even look right at you, and other sad anecdotes) are very moving. I think reading that stuff was more motivational for me than anything else. I never really got into the breathing thing, etc. Ultimately I think you lose weight by cutting calories and exercising more. Her breaking the system, or however she puts it exactly, are mainly about eating lots of low-fat and fat-free foods and cutting out the fatty stuff. For instance, you can eat one 100-calorie cookie and its calories are equivalent to, say, 5 cups of broccoli. But the broccoli's fat free. Yes, it's healthier to eat the broccoli, but sometimes you want a cookie. It'd make more sense for people to have one cookie and eat sensibly throughout the day and take a good walk a few times a week. Not high-volume eating of fat-free stuff. As for the breathing and other stuff, well, it's a bit off for me. But the stories did hit a chord with me, and that's worth something. And by the way, when I did read this book, I did lose some weight, but ultimately I got tired of the broccoli, etc, and put some back on. Now I'm counting calories and trying to work out to Denise Austin's Lifetime fitness programs at least five days a week, and I do let myself have the occasional cookie, and my clothes are feeling looser.
Book Review: a good read but seriously flawed Summary: 2 Stars
If you read the reviews which gave this book five stars you will discover few of the readers cite any actual weight loss they have experienced by following the book's advice. Instead they go on about how motivational the book is. I agree. It is a very entertaining read and Susan Powter comes across as an engaging personality. However her basic premise , that you can consume virtually unlimited quantities of food so long as it is low in fat is errant nonsense. You CAN'T.It is perfectly possible to get tubby on brown rice if you pile your plate high. Compare with reviewers of books which shun the high carb/ low fat myth - Protein Power and suchlike. You will find most of the reviewers have tried the diets and actually lost weight.
