This is a sumptuous and generous introduction to opera. But don't think you HAVE to take a child to the opera to enjoy these tales - these are rattling good stories, and the book is lavishly illustrated with a sensible "cast list" before each opera, to make the storytelling easier.
The CDs are beautifully read by Miranda Richardson - no less! - and come with snippets of (orchestral) extracts, mostly from overtures. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an unusual collection of stories with a musical theme.
