Book Reviews of Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1)Book Review: Love Harry Dresden Summary: 5 StarsI loved Desden Files after I watched the Sci-Fi channel and the show, and am sad it was canceled because it is the best
Book Review: Thoroughly Enjoyable Summary: 4 StarsThis is the first in a lengthy series of interwoven stories by Jim Butcher and served as the basis for an episode of the canceled Fox series, The Dresden Files. As much as I liked the TV shows, the books are a little bit different and significantly better.
The main character, Harry Dresden, is a wise-cracking wizard who advertises in the Chicago phonebook. He is well-acquainted with pop culture and not afraid to reference it! In book one, we discover that Harry is on mystic probation for killing his uncle with black magic. Its an event we only see in references but it stains Harry forever. He sees his availability to mortals as part of the penance he must pay, but that seems to only be a salve and not a cure.
The characters are well-defined and interesting. Harry (no relation to HP, by the way) is quirky but understandably so. And Bob is, well, you'll find out about Bob.
I give this book, and the rest in the series, a solid 4 star. They are thoroughly enjoyable, albeit light, reads.
Book Review: Full Of Possibilities, But....... Summary: 2 StarsI really wanted to like this book. The premise is great and Harry's impudent observations are very funny. But the plot soon plummets into a bad TV script that makes blood-letting and heart-ripping boring. Peopled with some boring characters and hackneyed situations. Even the interesting characters couldn't save this one.
Book Review: Storm Front Summary: 5 StarsGood book for fans of fantasy books. The Main character Harry is funny and powerful all at the same time. I love this series and will continue to read the remaining titles.
Book Review: Not a bad start. Summary: 3 StarsJim Butcher, Storm Front (Roc, 2000)
The beginning of the now wildly popular Harry Dresden series. In this one, Harry Dresden, wizard and consultant to the Chicago Police Department, is called in to a gruesome scene: two people have been murdered in flagrante delicto by having their hearts ripped out of their chests. Not nice (but, really, if I had to choose how to go out...). Meanwhile, he's got himself another case, a seemingly simple missing persons gig. But really, you have to ask yourself: is anything simple where a wizard is concerned? Not bloody likely.
It's a bit overwritten at times, and pretty seriously padded in minor ways (after all, is there anyone-- especially anyone likely to be reading a crime novel-- who needs to be told that Al Capone is "the infamous Al Capone"?), but once it gets going, it's quite readable despite the minor annoyances. I'll keep going with the series, if only to see if Butcher's writing style improves. Harry Dresden is an interesting enough character, and paranormal mysteries are always fun. ***
