Book Reviews of Story of the EyeBook Review: georges, georges, georges... man o man Summary: 4 Stars
Eyes, eggs, bull's balls. The whiteness and yellowness of the depraved universe in which we swim.
Where to start? Bullfights appall me. But women sitting in plates of milk I find rather appealing. And priests being brought face to face with their own inherent lust... well, it probably doesn't bother me as much as it should.
If you're having a bad day, just be glad you aren't Georges Bataille. The man lived in constant agony, and he suffered for his art. I am annoyed by snarky people on this website who whine that this book didn't fulfill their preconceptions. If it did, you should see a psychiatrist.
Georges Bataille was an extremely strange man. And the most strange thing about him was that he was ALIVE, and did not prune down his obsessions in order to match his neighbors' lawns.
Good on you, Georges. Thank you for your sacrifice.
Book Review: i'm young, dumb, and hung Summary: 5 Stars
inspirational piece of erotic fiction that makes better sinners out of all of us. its better not to know too much, but just dive right in. it's bataille vs. sexuality in all forms, religious, violent, depraved. i've bought this book like four times actually because i keep giving it to people and they never give it back.
Book Review: sexually bizarre surrealism Summary: 4 Stars
I read this book when I was 19, after the works of Sade. Bataille was admittedly very influenced by Sade's works and I guess this little novel shows how. Bataille said he wrote "Story of the Eye" while bedridden one hot torrid summer in a state of extreme horniness. Written in a surrealistic style, this is the story of a guy and his girlfriend and their sexually aberrant behavior, including elements of mental illness, sacrilege, murder, and other things better left unmentioned haha. This book had a strong impression on me, but I wondered if others would feel the same, so I lent it to a friend. He too found it very interesting. There is no doubt it is also disturbing, especially the autobiographical psychological stuff involving Bataille's blind father urinating with his eyeballs rolled up and Bataille's equating this with eggs. If you're in the mood for a sexually odd book, this is the one to go for.David Rehak author of "A Young Girl's Crimes"
Book Review: should have videotaped me reading Summary: 5 Stars
I was handed this book while I lived in NC and told by this friend I made, a Southern man, majoring in anthropology, to read it alone, or with another person. I was seduced into a knot, squirming around because it got the point where I couldn't read any faster. I wonder who told the male, who mocked my Northern accent, how to read this book.
2007 Update
I gave it to a friend to read, last I heard it had been passed on to another friend about 15 times, this was 3 years ago.
I bought another copy in 2005, passed it on again, again I am without the story. What a great book.
Book Review: stories of the bizarre Summary: 4 Stars
I would not buy this book again. I found it only mildly entertaining.
