Book Review: Enticingly deceptive

From an innocent beginning Lewyeka slowly draws you into a world you might have chosen to ignore. Her heroine, or victim, a beautiful young girl from Eastern Europe, leaves home despite her parents' concerns to take a job picking strawberries in rural England. With youthful hopes encouraged by classic English literature she is prepared for adventure and ready for everlasting love. Instead she finds a world more reminiscent of the dawn of industrialization and Dickens than bucolic villages and Austen.
The characters in Strawberry Fields are memorable although the author might have chosen softer outlines and leans on stereotypes a little too much. Nothing is quite black and white as clearly drawn villains and innocents turn out to be quite human in their complexity and divided allegiances. You find yourself rooting for your favorites and as the characters come and go you can't wait for their return to find out what happened.
Before you know it Lewyeka transports you from the countryside to London's modern underbelly, a world where immigrants survive by their wits or perish through their naivety. You might decide to never eat chicken again...enough said, read Strawberry Fields with an open mind and heart and you will not be disappointed.
