Book Review: Cute Is Justice!

The five cute girls' zany slice-of-life stories continue. Actually they are zanier than ever with unpredictable Miu and her pranks that become even sillier than before; klutzy Matsuri and her best friend Ana (and some secrets about their names); Chika who becomes more self-assertive and chain-smoking Nobue, "violent" sister figure of the group. There are more verbal gags than before (jokes based on the girls' names, for instance), but the translating team did a very good job and I think you can enjoy their funny "name game" and "proverbs." My favorite is Episode 49 in which, believe me or not, Miu remains seen, but not heard.
Apparently creator Barasui's narrative style hasn't changed much for Volume 5, but there are a few interesting points to be noted. The five girls' personalities are much clearer than before and as a consequence the story of each episode (mostly set in Nobue's house) is more character-driven, giving "timid" Matsuri more chances to shine.
[BOOK] Tokyopop' edition has the same front and back covers as the Japanese original except the background designs. But the original's two color pages are printed in black and white....again. This really should be changed in the future.
It is widely known among fans that the character designs of the comic "Strawberry Marshmallow" (especially that of Nobue) underwent several drastic changes in Volume 1. Interestingly some Japanese fans point out that in Volume 5 the characters' faces are at some places slightly (very slightly) rounder than before. I didn't notice that when I read the comic first, but perhaps they are right. See it for yourself.
And here are some things you might find interesting:
1) It has been suggested Ana Coppola is a daughter of a rich family. Now it is official. In this volume Miu finds a 10,000 yen note (about $ 100) in Ana's purse. (See p.27)
2) Miu's weird cry "Fungaah" (p. 29) is a famous line by Fujiko Fujio's popular manga character "Franken" from "Kaibutsukun." You might remember hearing the same line in the opening of anime "Lucky Star."
(And finally Volume 6 of Japanese edition of "Strawberry Marshmallow" is published here! We have waited about 22 months since the publication of Volume 5.)
