Having just finished this book, I'm happy to say I stuck with it to the end. For a while I found it difficuilt to warm to the author, and tired of his arrogance and moaning. He just seemed very intolerant - until his 'one night stand', then he seemed to loosen up a bit.
However, having had numerous holiday's spoilt myself due to lying rental companies and poor service over the years I now wish I too had been a bit braver and more forthright and demanding.
Truth is Dr Elder was just being very honest about his travels. He also tells us about some wonderful people and how warm and friendly most NZ people are towards travellers.
I've visited New Zealand myself, and recognised many of the places mentioned - and I too plan to return someday.
