Book Review: A Must Have Resource for Fathers

Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters by Dr. Meg Meeker is an excellent resource for fathers who want to lead an active role in their daughters life. We live in a society that is constantly marketing ideas and products that are not necessarily in the best interest of our children. As a result girls in our society are troubled by such conditions as eating disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, unwed pregnancy, abuse of drugs or alcohol to include prescription medication and failing in school. They enter into relationships with boys who are verbally, emotionally or physically abusive. This should not be acceptable to you. As a father you must take the active role as a parent or marketers, advertisers, media, and friends will do it for you. Dr. Meeker, a pediatrician, advocates that a strong father with conservative values is the most important factor in a young girls life so that she can grow up into a confident, well adjusted woman.
Dr. Meeker exquisitely states the power a father has in shaping his daughter when she writes:
"Every man who enters her life will be compared to you; every relationship she has with a man will be filtered through her relationship with you. If you have a good relationship, she will choose boyfriends who will treat her well. If she sees you as open and warm she'll be confident with other men."
As a father you are setting the stage and modeling behaviors that will provide your daughter with a solid foundation of what a "man" should be in relationships. What an awesome responsibility this is for a father. A responsibility that we cannot fail. After all, you are the most important man in her life.
Throughout the book Dr. Meeker provides many facts and statistics that should motivate you to be an active father. Not necessarily an easy task but one that you must embrace for the benefit of your daughter. Being a dad has so many benefits not to mention a great dad-daughter relationship. You will be the person she turns to for advice, you will be the person she turns to when she needs support, you will be the person she turns to when she needs to cry and wants a hug (this in no way diminishes the power and role of mothers). As a father you are your daughters hero, you are her first love, you will teach her humility, and you will protect her and defend her. An awesome responsibility! Don't worry as Dr. Meeker will provide plenty of relevant stories and provide you with a roadmap so that you can be a great father to your daughter.
Dr. Meeker states:
"At the beginning of her life, she will feel your love. At the end of her life, you will be on her mind. And what happens in between is up to you. Love her extraordinarily. This is the heart of great fathering."
I highly recommend this book to all fathers who have a daughter. Read it, highlight it, practice it daily and re-read it every now and again. After all, your daughter is worth it. Isn't she?
