Book Review: Classical yoga Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my favorite yoga books. Very informative book that aids understanding the anatomy in poses. I like that Mukunda provides charts to help in identifying which muscles might be weak or tight. For the poses, he identifies which muscles are being strengthened, which are lengthened, and which one are being targeted as a focus point.
Also provides sequences. Very helpful.
Book Review: Contains important info for yoga teachers Summary: 4 Stars
This book is really well-written and very well organized. It's important for yoga teachers to have access to this information because many teacher-training programs offer limited instruction in working with people who aren't already in pretty good physical shape. I've had this book for about six years and still refer to it from time to time when I have a student with a particular physical issue.
When I hear the term "yoga therapy" however, I tend to think more about psychological issues...hmmm...maybe just cause I'm a psych nurse who uses yogic principals heavily at work. This book does have a section about "stress" but I thought it was pretty basic. So, even though it is an important book to have, it would have been a little more helpful to me if there was more about using yoga to decrease anxiety, to treat addictions, to help with eating disorders and PTSD. The other part of using yoga for these problems is that some of typical words used and some of the fairly typical "yoga-teacher-behaviors" need to be just a little bit tweaked. The addition of these things in a book like this would make it really more inclusive.
Book Review: Finally something that helps! Summary: 4 Stars
Structural Yoga Therapy: Adapting to the Individual
I was referred to Makunda Stiles' Structural Yoga Therapy by Joan Borysenko, PhD. (Minding the Body, Mending the Mind) for severe neck pain that tradidtional medicine has been unable to address except through more surgeries and nerve blocks and drugs. I have just started the individual asanas that are recommended so I will have to add to this review when I have more information. I am very hopeful.
The author is very knowlegeable about anatomy and careful not to stress other areas of the body while addressing the problem area. His writing is clear and easy to follow. Hopefully, I will be able to add to this review after practicing his asanas and achieving some level of pain relief.
Book Review: Getting Personal Summary: 5 Stars
Want to create a yoga routine that is tailored for your needs? Structural Yoga Therapy is the book for you. Mukunda Stiles guides you through setting goals, body reading, freeing your joints, breathing and so much more. Charts and worksheets help you determine what muscles need strengthening and stretching. It is not a book for those who like sexy, glossy pictures but more a textbook for those who want more from their routine. I started yoga to relieve stress and to improve my posture and found that after six months I wasn't getting any further. Mukunda Stiles has made it easy for me to target problem muscles and joints and free my body into poses I never thought possible!
