Book Review: A fast, informative read
Summary: 3 Stars
I thought this was a good book. The author researched the topic well and excels at making weather an interesting topic. I wouldn't have anticipated being enthralled by the birth and development of a hurricane, but there I was. I also think it's important for our country to remember events like this to ensure the safety of future generations; for that the author deserves much credit. Where I felt the book stumbled was with the personal stories. It's a fine idea to introduce a personal touch, but the author introduced too many which led to the inevitable result that none of the stories were detailed or memorable enough. Many characters were introduced in the beginning of the book and not mentioned again until much later, by which time the reader (or at least this reader) had forgotten who was who. Paring down the number of personal stories and including more detail about a few people would have been more effective. I also thought it was strange that when describing the harrowing events as they related to various individuals, the author frequently neglected to tell us whether the individuals survived or perished. Maybe that's just my need for instant information and others feel differently, but I was left wondering what happened to many people. Where I rejoiced knowing that a certain person survived and grieved upon learning another died, for many others I had no emotional reaction at all because their fate was not disclosed. Overall, though, I recommend this book for the history lesson it teaches - especially for us New Englanders who may have forgotten that we are not immune to hurricanes.
