Book Review: 180-degree turn

Although I am an off-and-on long-time romance reader, I just discovered Kleypas a month and a half ago and don't know how in the world I had completely overlooked her in the past. Anyway, I ate up most of her historical books (not yet on the four-season Wallflower series) and just love most of them to death.
Then, I recently checked out the Texas series from a library branch. I have to say that her writing style took an abrupt 180-degree turn. It was so jarring and unfamiliar and mostly humor-free. This book was so depressing. I read for pure escapism and adventure, and this was not it.
Furthermore, the story focuses too much on the teenage girl's life and eventual struggles. Not much about romance that came much, much later or about fleshing out the 2nd "hero"'s character. I finished the book, hoping that it would get better, but it didn't. Even the Harlequin novels with similar themes are not as wordy and much better than this.
Quite a big disappointment. Thank God that I didn't kindle this book and the other 2 books (the 3rd being the "best" with only a 2.5 rating).
