Book Review: Is it Winter or Summer in Chicago? Summary: 4 StarsThis is the fourth installment in the Dresden files, the series created by the imaginative mind of Jim Butcher. The star of this series is Harry Dresden, Wizard for hire, who lives in Chicago.
In this book, Harry is in real trouble up to his eyeballs. Having already been the cause of a war between the Wizard's White Council and the Vampires Red Court, he is one step from termination if he doesn't do SOMETHING soon to put an end to this war.
But what can one Wizard do on his own? The Winter and Summer Queens of the Fairie empires are both wavering whether or not to side with the Wizards or the Vampires. The Winter Queen has bargained for Harry's debt to his Fairie Godmother and puts him in a position to investigate the death of the Summer Knight.
Even us mortals know it takes a mighty strong entity to kill a Fairie Summer Knight. All Harry has to do is find the killer, return the mantle of power to the rightful owner, but first figure out who that is. Being caught between the Winter and Summer Queens and their Ladies is not somewhere anyone, especially Harry wants to be.
We learn many things from this book: don't think all fairies are nice and kind, most aren't; when it rains toads, it might not be a weather phenomenon; going against both sides in a contest of wills, when all kinds of nasty creatures can be called into service, can be risky; werewolves and tiny fairies love pizza, and saving your neck is a dangerous thing to do without assistance.
Harry gets assistance from some allies he thought were dead or against him. He calls on the werewolves and leads them into danger, but hey, they go willingly, trusting that Harry will lead them to victory and goodness will prevail.
This is a face-paced story with the mortal, Karrin Murphy of Chicago PD, getting in her two-cents worth. For a mortal, Murphy tries to be there for Harry, but she is no match for the bad ghouls. She can hold her own for a while, but humans don't have the strength or stamina to last long against creatures that never seem to stay dead.
One really needs a scorecard to keep track of all the players and the good vs. evil entities keep changing. What is a Wizard to do?
Book Review: Fun! Summary: 5 StarsAnother romp with Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden. Just when you think he can't wreak more havoc, well this time it could mean the end of the world. Again.
I love Jim Butcher's writing style, the characters he populates the Chicago landscape with, and his delight in bad cliches and movie quotes. I just started the series about two weeks ago, and I have read through each and every book and they keep getting better. This is a must have for anyone who enjoys the paranormal genre.
Book Review: Excellent Book In An Excellent Series Summary: 5 StarsSummer Knight is my least favorite book in the series. Outside of the series, it is one of the best books I have read all year. I am a HUGE Anita Blake (by Laurell K. Hamilton) fan and have been very disappointed by that series lately. I was thrilled to discover the Dresden Files series. Harry Dresden is an inspired character. Intelligent, humorous and sexy. One liners in this series will make you laugh until you wet yourself. Guaranteed! Even when you think of them a week later you will giggle madly.
Series keeps to rules of it's own world. Book after book, adventure after adventure it stays true. Each book stands beautifully on it's own and fits into series without flaw. Extremely well written and imaginative.
Fun, fun, fun.
Also check out the first three in series as audio books narrated by James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Summer Knight is due as audio book soon as well.
If you have seen the TV show but not yet read the books BRACE YOURSELF as you are in for a treat. The books are a million times better than the show.
