Book Reviews of Summer Knight (The Dresden Files, Book 4)Book Review: Between a rock and a hard place for Harry....again Summary: 4 StarsSummary:
"Summer Knight" was a fun and quick read with familiar characters from prior books in the series. Harry shows a fair bit of gumption throughout the book -- a nice change from the sometimes overly done self-pity. The Fae were very nicely done by Jim Butcher. The story had a good amount of action, detective work and descriptive scenes. For the most part, the pacing was well done. Poor Harry never seems to get any rest -- not sure how he keeps fighting the good fight.
The phrase "death by a thousand cuts" has a whole new meaning for me after reading this book.
Characters: 4 stars
Story: 5 stars
Scenes: 5 stars (loved the Wal-mart sequence)
Overall: 4 stars.
The reason for 4 stars overall is that there was bit too much going on and everything fit a bit too nicely together. It felt rushed by the author; trying to force too much material into the target page count of the book.
Book Review: Not quite as good as the rest... Summary: 4 StarsI;m not entirely sure why I didn't care for this book as well as the first three. It's not that it was bad...but...hmmm...
I think a lot of it is becuase there's *too* much going on at once. Harry's got the White Council breathing down his neck, plus he's dealing with a war with the vampires, and now a war and murder with the faeries.
Now, don't get me wrong--I love urban faerie tales, and of all the portrayals of the fey, I think this one is my favorite second only to Emma Bull's "War for the Oaks". And I really like how much power the courts had in regards to nature.
Overall, the book is good. It just was a little too cluttered for my personal tastes. Still, read it! Cover to cover!
Book Review: I just love these books Summary: 5 StarsThese books are always fun to read. They move along at a quick pace and keep me laughing.
Book Review: FOURTH IN THE SERIES . .. SOLID, FUN URBAN FANTASY Summary: 4 StarsHarry Dresden is a wise-cracking detective for hire style wizard, who had a tendency to piss off a lot of people.
In book four, he's sort of started a war between the wizards and the vampires and the wizards are deciding whether they want to keep him or turn him into a sacrificial lamb.
One of his old flames from long ago shows up.
Mab, the Queen of the Faeries, manipulates him into investigating a murder that has bigger repercussions for Fae lands as well as the mortal world.
Other people are trying to kill him, too.
What's a wizard to do?
Well, Harry is pretty smart and capable, even if he hasn't bathed in several days and is close to being evicted. Oh, he's depressed so he's pushed away all his friends at this point. Heh.
The mystery for this one is particularly good, so, if like the red herring ploy, Butcher uses it quite well here.
Pretty good use of Fae legends and spells.
Enjoy.
Book Review: GREAT read! Summary: 5 StarsI fell into this book series by accident. But once I read the first book, I was totally hooked by this great hero (?) and his motley cast of characters. SUMMER KNIGHTS was no different than the first 3 books. I love Harry Dresden. He is not a genius, hia magic doesn't always work quite the way it should, but he is a man that cares deeply about protecting his fellow human beings from things they don't always believe exsist. In this book, Harry has to deal with things that he doesn't quite believe in. It's done with style and humor that is irresistable. It's a definite must read.
