Book Reviews of Super Baby Food

Book Review: A great book for first time mothers
Summary: 5 Stars

I could not have done without this book since my baby started on solids. this book has everything you need to know on how to feed your baby from buying to storing to cooking. my baby is one now and i must say that she is tall and healthy and very strong. you only need this one book on feeding for your baby's first year.

Book Review: A great guide
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book! I am not a vegetarian nor are my children but the information that was provided about each specific food and at what month it is best for your babies digestive system was most helpful. I wouldnt go without it. There may be alot of information that you will not use but the good information outways the bad for sure.

Book Review: A great resource
Summary: 4 Stars

I agree- Ignore the negative reviews. As with anything (and as suggested by the author), you should always check with your pediatrician...

That said, I have found this book to be a wonderful resource. It has easy-to-follow tables that say when it is safe to introduce which foods and how much to feed at what age. There are comprehensive guides explaining how to prepare each food, how to best store them, etc.

I work full-time, and have found it very easy to make all of my son's foods, especially using some of the short cuts suggested in this book. Yes, it is wordy, and yes there are parts that could have been left out or scaled back, but I read it cover to cover and learned a lot!

Book Review: A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing
Summary: 2 Stars

We were given this book when our son was 6 months. Many of the tips were excellent and practical. I agree with the theme that home prepared food is generally healthier than packaged foods - plus you know what you are giving your child. However, many assertions made in the book are either plain wrong or of dubious validity. My focus was on what source of DHA Omega 3 to give my son once he went off formula/breastmilk.

Ruth says she doesn't understand what all the fuss is about eating fish. Under which rock has she been hiding? The benefits of eating oily fish are well documented by respected researchers. She has a valid concern about the nasty minerals in certain fish. This can be addressed by being selective about your choice of fish and/or fish oil.

She recommends substituting flax seed oil becuase it has a higher concentration of linoleic acid (an omega 3 fatty acid) than most fish. The catch is that flax seed oil is rich in ALA but does not contain DHA or ARA which are the fats the body really needs. Our bodies can convert ALA to these fats but the conversion is not very efficient. Fish oil is the best source of DHA and ARA period. To recommend otherwise is irresponsible.

Book Review: A little bit paranoid...
Summary: 3 Stars

It's an OK book...but the steps described when making baby food are very tedious. Moreover, there is some paranoia going on...I am not going to use a straw to suck the last little bit of air out of a freezer bag before sticking it in the freezer. Just press and zip. I think this book is making baby food at home much more complicated than it needs to be. However, there was some good advice as to when to introduce which food and what to look out for when shopping for produce. Not my favorite, but it's OK.
