Book Reviews of Super Baby Food

Book Review: A little overwhelming and difficult to read but great info.
Summary: 4 Stars

I've checked out tons of books on baby food since my little one started eating solids and there's all kinds of conflicting, confusing information out there. This book has so much information in it, it's really difficult to sit down and read it, especially if you have a little crawler roaming around. I'm a vegetarian and rather health food minded but I jokingly call this book "Super Hippie Baby Food" because it's a little much even for me. I'm giving it four stars though simply because it does encourage people to cook for their babies and not participate in the baby food buying maddness. It also encourages people to start feeding babies whole, healthy foods. I'm game, so I'm going to try out the "super poridge" and see how it goes over I also think it's a really good idea to make your own yogurt so I'm gonna give that a try. As for recipes... I think I'll stick with "Animal Crackers and Wild West Beans" it's easier to read.

Book Review: A little too "Natural" for me
Summary: 2 Stars

I carefully researched many baby cookbooks and decided to purchase this one based on customer comments. I was disappointed to find I wouldn't eat, nor have on hand many of the items she recommended to feed my baby. Dessicated powdered liver? Brewers yeast? Whole grains only from natural food stores? Nut and seed milk? This is a great book if you are already a natural food buyer and a vegetarian, but NOT if you are an average mom who goes to a regular grocery store, and God forbid, eats red meat occasionally. Having a baby changes your life enough!! If I complied with all of her recommendations, I would have to completely change my family's eating habits and where we shop. Is it possible to make baby food that is healthy, yet is more accomodating to our lifestyle?

Plus, the author sometimes is a bit "preachy" ("No carbonated drinks until age 21")and overdoes all of her instructions. Must we be reminded to clean out our strainer, or keep the lid on our food processor?

Book Review: A lot of book with very little good information
Summary: 2 Stars

There is some good information in this book, but a lot of garbage to sort through to get to it. I am a new mother, I work, I am busy- So get to the point! Also, I am not going to cook two meals forever, and I have been feeding my daughter table food since she was 10 months old. This book does not teach you how to get your baby to eat table food, but assumes you will be making seperate meals. Although she claims it is easy and fast, it is not that fast.
I also object to her tone (for instance "the whiter the bread, that faster you're dead"). I can feel plenty guilty about my lack of parenting skills on my own. I don't need a book to add to it.

Book Review: A lot of clutter in the book
Summary: 2 Stars

I own this and Karmel's "First Meals." I find this book to be restricting because: 1) it has a lot of "clutter," or information I don't want in my baby food book, such as a section on "Arts and Crafts"; 2) it has little to offer for babies younger than 6-months old, and even then it "allows" few foods until your baby is about 8 or 9 months old (my 16-pound 4-month old obviously didn't read the books that say he isn't ready for food!); 3) I find the organization of the book somewhat confusing and usually have to refer to the index to find what I want.

In the whole book, I pretty much only use the section called, "Specific Fruits and Vegetables" (can you guess what information is entailed by that title???)--it offers an alphabeticaly listing of all fruits and veggies and discussing how to pick, store and cook them. For anyone who is new at this, I would recommend you buy this book for that section alone. But I do find her age recommendations to be a bit restricting and I don't follow them very faithfully (based upon recommendations by my pediatrician).

Book Review: A must for every kitchen library!
Summary: 5 Stars

EXCELLENT BOOK! Even though I bought the book to learn more about making super nutricious, healthy foods for my baby, I have found our family has started eating better. Even my picky 4 year old has eaten the foods I have prepared for him from the recipes from SuperBabyFood book. (his favorite..whole grain pop tarts) I love the section on preparing specific fruits and veggies. Overall, SuperBabyFood book is an all in one book not only with super healthly receipes, but many money saving tipes we all can benifit from..for example...homemade baby wipes! Even tho Ms. Yaron doesn't agree with feeding baby meats, I believe children should have meats as part of their diets. WONDERFUL EASY TO FOLLOW BOOK! A must for every kitchen library!
