Book Review: 80's relaunch gives Supes a little more character

In 1986, this groundbreaking miniseries was launched, and the way that Superman was interpreted in the comic medium was altered for the better. Gone was the impervious, near-invulnerable demigod; in his place was a hero of great ability who had some very definite limitations. This is definitely a Superman more for our age. The Superman of previous generations really had little forward story arc - and what little bit he did have happened in the 1970's. Here, illustrator and writer John Byrne give us a glimpse into Clark Kent's mind and soul; we see what he's thinking and feeling, and we see that he does at times have a fear of failure. Above all, we see that his midwestern upbringing has shaped him more than anything else, and that his integrity is a direct reflection of Jonathan and Martha Kent's teachings. (Byrne has wisely opted to keep the Kents alive, giving them a chance to influence the adult Clark more directly. Byrne's drawing style is very distinctive, and to me this coupled with his thoughtful writing give man of Steel a classic feeling. This is solid comic entertainment. Final Grade - A-
