Book Reviews of Swine Not?: A Novel Pig TaleBook Review: Oink! Oink! Oink! Summary: 1 Stars
Just some advice: Jimmy...don't quit you singing career!! My wife gave me this book for my BD...I was skeptical at first and grew even more so as I got into the book. Whew...what a waste of my time...and yours, too! Maybe, and it's a BIG "maybe" this story might lend itself to one of those very colorful and largely illustrated children's book, but a novel, it ain't!! Reduce the type face to a "normal" size and reduce the spacing between the lines and you have a short story that is very dumbed- down and boring....cutesy would also be an applicable word. As you can see, I am not a fan of this book. Another bit of advice...this time to you: Spend your hard earned money on something else! This book should be butchered for bacon! Enough said...Oink! :-)
Book Review: Ok, but.... Summary: 3 Stars
I'm a huge Buffett fan and pre-ordered this book just because Jimmy wrote it, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed. This has to be his poorest literature offering to date. I'm not sure what I expected and I didn't totally dislike the book, it's just not what I have come to expect from Jimmy. Perhaps that's why he wrote it, but I really enjoyed his past books and would have liked something more along those lines. It is definitly a kids book and a pretty good one when taken soley as such. I however miss the Joe Merchant characters and ocean adventures which this is far from. I would recommend it to kids to read and loyal Buffett fans just because it's a JB book. Other than that...it was an ok read for me, entertaining enough to hold your attention, but predictable and not really worth reading again in my opinion.
Book Review: Pig's inner life...talking animals are for kids...you silly Buffett! Summary: 2 Stars
Well, not at all what I hoped it would be -- sadly. The book is based on the illustrator's real-life experiences trying to keep a pig hidden in a NY Hotel for four years.
The general synopsis is a southern woman with twins, a pig and cat move to a fancy NY hotel near Central Park to be the new pastry chef and the differing viewpoints regarding the trouble one must go through to hide a pig in the Big Apple.
Each chapter is told in either the pig's voice (surprise) or the twin boy's voice. You'll enjoy the inner life of the pig and all the shenanigans that ensue...disguises...speaking with other animals...the pigeon patrol (yeah, they talk too)...searching for a long-lost twin pig brother -- oh, and did I mention the pig is a mean soccer goalie? Of course there is an "evil" chef who wants to catch the hidden pig -- pork chops anyone?
The main downfall is that this could be restructured into a prize-winning children's book (or a whole series of books)-- it is NOT an adult book; and frankly you will be ticked-off that you weren't told and paid the price. Ugh.
"Charlotte's Web," Wilbur the talking pig and the other barnyard animals are much better (anyone remember "Babe") - for more of a Pig-edge, read "Animal Farm."
Book Review: Pure Hogwash! Summary: 1 Stars
I've always enjoyed Buffett's music and found his previous books interesting enough. "Swine Not", however, didn't even come close to entertaining. To be honest, I've read thousands of books, some great, some not so good. But this is probably one of less than five that I've not even bothered to waste my time finishing. Boring, unfunny, and unimaginative...at least the first 60 pages!
Book Review: Slightly Disappointed Parrothead Summary: 4 Stars
I am a dyed-in-the-wool (or should I say, dyed-in-the feather?)Parrothead and have loved Jimmy's past endeavors in writing and was looking forward to recieving this book. Cute, but really for the younger set, not the adults. I tried hard to get into it but just couldn't muster the love for the book that I expected. Still an interesting story and if you consider that it was based off of a real pig living in NYC and the fact that they dressed the pig like a dog is a hoot. Speaking of "hoot" - this would be a cute movie like "Hoot" which my younger daughter has watched many times. That's where I'd like to see this story headed - a good, clean, fun movie for the kids that I'd watch with them.
