Book Reviews of Sybil

Book Review: Excellent Book!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is intense and captivating. What makes it more important is that it is true. Sybil is the first widely known case of MPD. This book is a must for psychologists and counselors everywhere.

Book Review: Multiple Praises for Multiple Personalities
Summary: 4 Stars

Sybil was phenomenal. Schreiber's writing caused me to reassess the cliché "mind over matter." The psychological coping mechanisms that Sybil implores while trying to thrive in society are both disturbing and intriguing. The books allows for emotional insight into the mind of a mentally disturbed young woman from a literary vantage point as opposed to a mere medical analysis of her illness. A definite must read.

Book Review: Scarey Book
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an awesome book, but very scarey. Read the book many years ago and wanted to read it again.

Book Review: Sticks with you...
Summary: 5 Stars

I first read this in 1974 when it came out in paperback. I was like 12... (parents didn't edit my reading material, only the movies. lol) Riveting. Graphic. And at the time, nothing like it had been published before. Probably one of the reasons hypnosis began fascinating me, even then.

Book Review: Sybil
Summary: 5 Stars

It is an incredible, unbelievable life story. Just thinking of what that poor woman endured in her young life, makes one wonder...what on earth?!!!...where was her mother? Unfortunately, her mother was the one abusing her. Sad! Disgusting!!

Her little mind split into multiple personalities so as to be able to protect her from the trauma as it was happening. A daily ritual for her.

It is also fascinating how our brain works to try to help protect us either by fragmenting into multiple personalities, or other ways such as repressed memories, dissociation.

Unfortunately, this kind of extreme abuse is still happening, but to a greater degree. Now, there are services available to help and support those who have been, and those who are continuing to be, viciously traumatized.

Be warned this book is extremely explicate, not for children.
