Book Reviews of SyrupBook Review: Believable Summary: 5 Stars
Scat has an idea for a new cola, and 6 can help him make it to the big time. But Sneaky Pete is stealing the idea, so competition arises. Fans of Ben Elton should enjoy this book - taking a closer look on a modern topic (marketing) and bringing it to the public eye. Enjoyable all the way. (A+)
Book Review: Breathless Sendup Summary: 3 Stars
"Syrup" is a non-stop Disneyland joyride of a book, alternately uproariously funny and scathingly cynical. The author's grasp of over-the-top marketing techniques probably sounded clever to him at the time, but it's hard to out-gutter-dive Madison Avenue and Hollywood, who have made his satirical novel seem rather tame in the 4 years since it was published. In a battle of style-versus-substance, I wish this novel had a bit more in the plot department but obviously it isn't meant to be the GAN and it isn't. Just a reckless romp through the absurd world of marketing, in a Spider Robinsonesque abandon.
Book Review: Brilliant Satire Summary: 5 Stars
It's hard to describe this book--it's more like a commercial than a novel. But it's a commercial not selling anything, or, if anything, it's selling Barry's genius. And I'm buying.
Soda thing is, (sorry) this shouldn't be a good book. There isn't much characterization, the plot isn't exactly groundbreaking, and, as Sneaky Pete points out, Scat has learned nothing by the end of the book. But it all works. Brilliantly. There's no describing why or how this book is so great, but it's fantastic; loaded with satirical tidbits and critical of all the right things in all the right ways. It only takes a couple of hours to read as well; there's really no reason not to read this book.
Book Review: Brilliant Satire on Marketing! Summary: 5 Stars
This is another brilliant book by Max Barry who is one of the best satirists out there regarding office and business situations. This time he pokes his wit at the Marketing Industry. The main character who calls himself Scat (because it is a cool name) claims that every individual can come up with three million dollar ideas per year. Scat has his first; coming up with a revolutionary name for a new Coke drink. He tries to pitch it to a young marketer called "6." Immediately Scat is intrigued by 6 and falls in love with her even though she has made it clear that men are not her thing.
Scat's idea is a big smash but unfortunately it is undermined by his roommate, aptly named Sneaky Pete. The book moves rapidly with Scat coming up with great idea after another hoping to be rich and land 6 to boot.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more work by Mr. Barry!
Book Review: Buy this book! Summary: 5 Stars
A good story, with memorable characters, a breakneck pace, and dozen of laugh-out-loud lines. SYRUP is simply a perfect read. I loved it, and am starting up a U.S. chapter of the Official Sneaky Pete Fan Club.
